| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | May 26, 2005 Dark brown colour. Coffee leads the aroma with raspberry and chocolate nuances. Medium body. Smooth. Milk chocolate sweetness with light raspberry and mild background coffee. It’s only those three elements, really, but they are well-structured. However, as a dessert beer it could probably use a bit more heft. argo0 (6969), Washington DC, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Mar 16, 2003 Clear mahogany body. Aroma is predominantly raspberry, but also has some milk chocolate. Taste is raspberry up front, but light coffee moves in on the tongue to share the spotlight. Not too sweet, which is always a concern with a beer like this one. jcwattsrugger (5550), Florida and, New Jersey, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Feb 9, 2008 on tap-pours a creamy light brown head and black color with red tint. Aroma is cocoa powder first then dark chocolate and raspberry (Kathy gets the raspberry first). Taste is dark chocolate, candied raspberry, malty with a secondary/mild hops backbone. OK carbonation. Occasional. 3.0 On nitro-roastier, creamier. 3.2 CaptainCougar (5520), Rockville, Maryland, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jun 17, 2009 Tap at Arundel Mills in Mar 2008: Pours an opaque black with dark brown edges and a frothy creamy dark tan head. Aroma of sweet, smoky dark malts and a touch of milk chocolate and grain. Body starts lightly caramely sweet, quickly drying out before an earthy smoky lingering finish. I didn’t taste much raspberry flavor, but pretty good nonetheless. hopscotch (5510), Vero Beach, Florida, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jan 26, 2003 Very good beer!
The aroma is of raspberries and Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee. Also a bit acrid with chocolate notes.
Pours thick and black. No light's gonna make it past this pint glass. In fact, WAIT, the Sun just got sucked into my glass. That's no eclipse outside, folks. Sorry about the "Lights Out." Blame DuClaw. Huge creamy well-tanned head. Mostly lasting with excellent, thick lacing.
The flavor is of raspberries and espresso with blasts of bittersweet chocolate and buttermilk up front. Very well- balanced with plenty of bitter and pungent hops on the backside.
Full-bodied with a creamy mouthfeel and soft carbonation. Medium-length, bitter, astringent, dry finish.
Very nice dessert beer! muzzlehatch (4427), Burlington, Vermont, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 4, 2006 Nice-sized draught sample at the Bel Air location. Near-opaque, almost black and impenetrable, with a lasting wisp of head and decent lacing.....raspberry/chocolate cookie aroma, very fresh, intense with dark cocoa liqueur and a trace of vanilla....the body is excellently balanced between firm dryish black malts, heavy roast, and sweet-tart raspberry wafer cookies, you would expect decadence here and you don’t get it, but that makes it a nice session beer really, not a sipper....quite unusual, really, in being easy-to-drink yet intensely fruity/chocolaty....towards the finish, woody/twiggy hops show up...carbonation is a little high and the mouthfeel, pleasantly potent, could be even fuller, but I have few real criticisms, this is a pleasure. goldtwins (4084), Nesconset, New York, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Apr 25, 2007 Tap @ Arundel Mills: The beer was an almost opaque chestnut brown color with a beige head. The aroma had big raspberry notes with some dark chocolate underneath. It smelled like those chewy chocolate covered candy log things. The flavor was roasty and the raspberry was light. Nothing like the aroma. There was also a hint of coffee. The flavor lightened up a good bit on the finish. Medium bodied. egajdzis (3631), Spring Mount, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 25, 2009 Poured an opaque black color with a medium sized, tan head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malts, dark chocolate, some smoke, caramel, vanilla, and a bit of raspberries. Taste of dark chocolate, lightly tart raspberries, roasted malts, smoke, and vanilla beans in the finish.
