The aroma is thin, but some nutty malts and faint coffee are noticed. Mouthfeel is a tad thin for the style. Bitter baking chocolate is in the mouth along with plenty of walnut character. Overall, the thing is missing most thickness or sweetness which may usually be found in a brown ale.
On the plus side, the cloying, syrupy candy sweetness I’ve come across in some others in the style is missing here. The finish brings out this very tart flavor of rubbing alcohol, but all burn or any warmth at all is completely absent. That taste is faint indeed, but I’m immediately reminded of the same flavor which is overpowering in the Heinzelmannchen Scotch Ale. Maybe I’m a step closer to solving that mystery. desurfer (1068), Pinellas Park, Florida, USA

This comes off, to me, more like a Scottish ale than a brown ale, which I find to be more bland and weak than this beer. maniac (2628), Richmond, Virginia, USA

| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Aug 6, 2006 Thanks to SecretSanta Degarth for sending this my way. Very nice dark brown body with a small ivory head. Some sweet malts in a very minimal aroma, possibly some nuts as well. Sourdough bread yeast, nice nuts, some light caramel. Hops aren’t really present in this beer at all. Sweet malty ending. It’s possible this was an infected bottle, given the slight tartness and sour notes in it... even so, it’s an enjoyable beer. | 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jun 18, 2006 On tap @ brewery. Dark brown color with tan head. Nice looking beer. Not much aroma. I sense a bit of malt sweetness. Nice caramel flavor balanced by some bittering hops. There is also a bready yeast flavor that adds a bit of complexity to a beer that really needs it. I also get a little grainy or nuttiness near the finish. I should have let the beer warm some to bring out more of the flavors and aroma. They serve it too cold. redlight (1487), Winter Park, Florida, USA
