Ernest (4250), Boulder, Colorado, USA Aug 18, 2002 Updated: Oct 1, 2006 2006 bottle (freshtastic!). Head is initially large, frothy, white, mostly lasting. Body is hazy dark yellow, bottle conditioned. Aroma is moderately malty (toasted grain, cookie), lightly hoppy (flowers, herbs), lightly yeasty (cobwebs), with notes of honey, pepper, clove, banana, pineapple, cinnamon, alcohol. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, velvety texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic. Unbelievably sexy, literally makes me shiver with delight. The key to most Dupont beers is freshness (i.e., preferably drink during the same year as what’s on the cork), since the yeast strain(s) is/are not particularly farmy and don’t improve its character with age. This is the best sample I’ve ever had of this (the ’04 was pretty sweet), and should probably buy a case.
dchmela (772), Orlando, Florida, USA Oct 7, 2008 Pours a hazy yellow orange with a huge creamy white head. Honey floral citrus aroma with hints of pepper and belgian style funk. Taste is smooth and slightly creamy with big carbonation. I also get honey and a grassy hop bitterness. A very enjoyable saison. BMan1113VR (906), Los Angeles (and Dallas, TX), California, USA Oct 7, 2008 Bottle thanks to ilovedarkbeer. Organic. The curse of the green bottle. Pours with a fluffy, rocky white head covering a hazy golden body. Aroma of corn, skunk, honey, wheat, and weed, and something a bit spicey. Taste is corn tortillas (plane and simple), with a lot of astringency, water (at 8%?). I guess the alcohol is at least somewhat decently hidden. vyvvy (1728), Hazelwood, Missouri, USA Sep 27, 2008 Pours murky amber with a quickly dissipating white head. The aroma has lots of nectar fruits, honey, sweetish malt, earthy yeast and biere de garde style mustiness. Medium / full body that’s smooth with some moderately sharp carbonation. The flavor starts with some nectar fruits, but drier than the aroma, honey, lots of phenolic spice and bits of esters. The finish is smooth, fruity and slick. A good saison. DuffMan (1962), Calgary, Alberta, Canada Sep 16, 2008 Cloudy golden orange with a huge white finely bubbled head. Massively wheaty aroma, some soft honey tones as well. Very estery palate, sweet malt, spicy dry finish. Excellent saison, although not terribly complex. smith4498 (375), Miami, Florida, USA Sep 12, 2008 Pours hazy dark golden color with white head. Aromas of honey, bread, dough and spices. Flavors of yeast, lemon and a touch of honey sweetness. The honey really adds nice and different flavor. Light to medium body with soft carbonation and a creamy mouthfeel. A decent saison.
