I hate following Flaco Alto in the ratings. :)
Makes me want to just give up and not even try to describe the damn thing. But man, this beer was something else. Certainly the best <4% ABV beer I’ve ever had, plausibly the best <5% ABV. Just the glorious funky house essence, summer fields and ah, Dupont, Dupont, Dupont flavor. Light like sparkling water but complex like Avec Les Bon Vieux, I think I’d drink nothing else (beer or any other liquid) all hot summer if this was readily available.
I had this one side by side with a draft Avec Les Bon Vieux, which on tap is one of my favorite beers of all time. I thought this would be a disaster compared to the stronger cousin. Almost the opposite; the winter beer was hot, sticky, almost heavy-handed after this refreshing zestful delight. A triumph!
750 ml bottle. Oh man, this is great stuff, confirming everything I thought after trying it on tap. Definitely the ultimate sparkling water, plenty of sulfur (the good kind, like smoke from firecrackers or friction on dried rubber, not like rotten eggs or dog farts), lovely bitter close. Splendid splendid beer.
badlizard (1430), San Diego, California, USA Aug 20, 2008 On tap at Hamiltons. Clear yellow with no head. Herbal spice aroma and taste with a crisp dry finish. Boutip (1745), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada Aug 19, 2008 Bottle courtesy of mgermani: Poured a hazy light yellow color ale with a super large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma consists of funky yeast with what smells like some light wheat malt notes. Taste is a mix between some funky barnyard notes with an interesting Belgian malt base. While I applaud the decision to brew a light ABV saison type beer form the brewery I feel that the funk is not balanced as well as in some off their other offering and I would have also like a more prominent hops presence in this beer without going overboard. Interesting but also disappointing considering the brewery reputation and I can’t understand why so many are in awe of this beer – I would take the Saison Dupont or the Moinette any day over this. ChainGangGuy (1511), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA Aug 17, 2008 Appearance: Pours a clear, yellow body with a tall, though collapsing, white head.
Smell: Aroma of wheat, sliced bananas, lemon, pressed flowers, and damp hay. There’s some slight skunkiness to the nose as well.
Taste: Light, lightly tangy wheat flavor with tastes of banana, citrus zest, and spices. Touch of honey sweetness. Hint of sourdough. Spicy, floral hops, lightly bitter. Finishes quite dry with a mild bitterness and grassiness remaining.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium-low carbonation.
Drinkability: Oh-so immensely refreshing, Avril is a fine choice for absolutely any time of the day, any time of the year. Also recommended for children, pets, and the elderly. michael-pollack (1360), King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 13, 2008 750ml Bottle: Sweetish aroma. Smells of herbs, spices, coriander, hops, and yeast. Poured dark yellow/gold/corn in color with a medium-sized white head that diminished but lasted throughout. Cloudy. Sparkling. Full of small particles. Flavor is kinda neutral. Tastes of spices, coriander, wheat, hops, yeast, and some banana. Medium body. Thickish texture. Soft carbonation. Dry, spice and yeast finish. bhensonb (2832), Woodland, California, USA Aug 12, 2008 Bottle, corked and caged, as Avril. Hazy gold color with a good white head. Aromas of light citrus zest, light funk and yeast. Medium body with coarse carbonation. Flavor is salty?, yeasty, slightly malty, and zesty. Overall it’s a "hard" flavor. Quite dry in the finish. Crisp and refreshing.
