Draught at Starfish. FINALLY managed to track down this elusive beauty, only brewed when Patrick from Starfish has saved up enough oyster liquor to make a batch. Dark ruby-black with a creamy and persistent tan head. Great aroma of toasted malt, cocoa and a hint of oyster (trust me, it works). Fairly full bodied, fuller than I remember Durham Blak Katt being. Excellent flavour - the full malt, coffee and cocoa elements are given an extra edge by the slight oyster notes in the finish. Went well with some oysters and other seafood, of course. A really fine pint!

[1852-20081108] Tap. Rich chocolate roasted malt aroma has a hint of sea salt. Brown black body with a long-lasting creamy light tan head and nice cascading sides. Creamy rich roasted malt flavour has mild salt and lots of chocolate notes. Thick full body. Lovely beer, very enjoyable.

Draft @ Starfish as Patrick’s Oyster Stout. Ruby tinged black body with a creamy beige head. Mild roasty aroma, muted sweet malt. Creamy palate is exquisite, with the head almost a lighlty whipped milk in texture. Flavour is a touch muted at times but mild roast and plenty of pleasant chocolate notes throughout are quite nice. Nice accompaniment to some PEI oysters. Thought this was pretty similar to the Black Katt, but I actually preferred this to a sample of the BK later in the evening.

On tap, Beer Bistro. I’m a big fan of the normal stout from Durham, so I was wondering how this would turn out, especially as I am no fan of oysters. Thankfully, the additional flavour made quite a nice beer. It looks the same, pitch black, but the head was far creamier looking and thick. Taste was extremely creamy and sweet too - a real dessert beer, more so than some chocolate stouts I’ve had. The saltiness and oyster flavour was present but balanced nicely - this could have been really easy to mess up, but they’ve made a really nice beer here. Just not something I could have more than one of at a time, but a lovely treat.

Draught, BeerBistro

Almost black. Strongly fruity, over top of sublime roastiness and chocolate. Sweet overall. A little too sweet, really, but a solid effort.

Black w/ large, creamy (nitro) beige head. Very nice lace. Roasty, chocolate flavour w/ a salty, briny, oyster quality (no doubt from the oyster water). Smooth, creamy, typically nitro feel. Flavour is roasty w/ chocolate, coffee, some woody hops, &, of course, salty oyster brine.
