Commercial Description:
In 1991, the brewery decided to revive an old custom harking back to the 14th century when there were no means of refrigeration. Beer was then traditionally brewed in early December and stored over the winter under naturally cool conditions. The first barrels were only opened in March, as the days started to become warmer. It has a fresh, springlike bouquet with dominant tones of malt and grains. It is made using a top fermentation yeast, malted barley and newly harvested Alsation hops. With 5.4% alcohol by volume, it is a pure malt beer that is highly refreshing. It has a fine white head and clear golden colour, a dominant hoppy taste with a hint of fruitiness. Best served between 5 and 6°C.

Bottle, May 2008. The bottle had been resting for a week and still exploded when I opened the cap. Beer everywhere. The head is pretty huge, but disapears quickly. It’s a clear golden colour in the glass, showing its carbonation. I smell bread, lime in the hops and a bit of skunkiness. Mouthfeel is thin. The flavour is simple and very light; I taste honey, grass and a bit of sweet citrus, maybe lemon or lime.

(Rating #1896)

The aroma is weak but nice with hops, malt, and some yeast. The appearance is hazy gold with a nice head. The flavor is like the aroma and decent. The palate is thin. Overall it’s good.

Pour is a bright golden with a large white head. Aroma is nice with a lot of musty funk and grain. Flavor is very thick and sweet with some breadyness and corn syrup. This one started off good but went downhill fast with the thickness. I don’t think this style should be so heavy.

Pours golden orange with a white head. The aroma has the earthy mustiness that I like in Biere de Gardes, but is a touch sweet. Medium slick body with sharp frothy carbonation. The taste has the aroma traits, but is a lot sweeter, almost syrupy sweet. Fair at best. If the sweetness had been muted a bit this could have been quite nice.

My first BDG (I think). Refreshing. White head, which peters out to lace. A bit sweet, a little hoppy.
