Commercial Description:
With its splendid golden hues and fruity tones, Jenlain No. Six has a distinctive bitter finish and a hoppy nose. The barley-scented liquor sparkles under its light, foamy head. Light and thirst-quenching, with a rich characteristic savour, it is best served at between 5 and 6°C, with a meal or as an aperitif. Filtered, and lagered but unpasteurised.

Editor’s Note:From 2000 until March 2005 this was known as Jenlain Blonde. The name Jenlain Blonde now is used for a new (March 2005) product of 7.5% abv.

Can. Malty with some fruity (pineapple/syrup from canned pineapples). Sweet but fairly drinkable in a trampy kind of way.

Pours a hazy gold color. Aromas of hops. Flavors of wine-like grape taste, creamy malt witha short dry malt aftertaste.

Bottle, at No. 5 (030901). Light golden, nice white head. Aroma and flavor sweet/malty (flowery, perfume?) and hoppy/bitter. Light to medium body, oily. I liked it very much. I think the version was 6,5%.

Bottle. Golden with off white head. Aromas are fresh, soapy and watery with caramel and some spices. Flavours are soft caramel, buttery malts with some sweet lemon. Prickly on the finish. Pretty thin and not very interesting.

I’ve had some Jenlain before (in Atlanta, with jacob and hank and...) but I never remember which one...my brain does not respond to the marketing of this company. (BTW, my wife said a similar thing recently to me when we were discussing the distinctive marketing of a certain artisinal US brewery). This is a bitter beer; there do appear to be the kinds of flavors you would want (malty, sourdough bread, bitterness, butteryness -- but not diacetly) but it all seems too intense, biting. Interesting. The body doesn’t carry the flavors well.

75cl bottle from Auchan, Calais. Golden beer with thin white head. Some citrus hop on nose but a bit sickly and syrupy in mouth. Finish has more citrus hop, but to be honest I couldn’t finish the bottle.

Bottle shared with HogTownHarry at Smokeless Joe. Pours a clear bubbly gold with an average size white head. Sweet aroma of grain, honey and light floral hops (I saw the green bottle and dreaded the skunky aroma to come but I was pleasantly surprised to find that there was no skunkyness at all). The flavour is of a good Pilsener -- it’s sweet and not overly carbonated. Good beer but not for me as I’m not a big Pilsener fan but anyone who is should enjoy this.

Bottle (750ml). At Smokeless Joe shared with blankboy. Poured bubbly clear gold with a small white head. Aroma of horse blanket, grain, a bit uriney. Taste was thin yet sweet, sweeter as it warmed, with a slightly vegetal aftertaste. Mouthfeel was light, slightly chalky, with no linger at all. This is a reasonably clean tasting lite beer, that’s about all.
