Aroma is dark roast malts, hazelnut, chocolate, and almonds. Taste is full-bodied, smooth, and very malty. The best of the Earl’s beers by a significant margin. joss (3687), Garching b. Hazy, dark dark brown red body with a quick foamy white head. Nice grainy roast malt flavour. Medium-full body. Nice dark, repeatable. jerc (3954), Toronto, Ontario, Canada
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Nov 6, 2007 Draft @ Earls in Banff. Brown body, small tan head (3+). Sort of earthy, dusty malt in the aroma. Light toffee and caramel notes. Similar pleasant earthy malt in the flavour, light caramel malt, and a touch of bitterness to balance it. (6+) Average palate. Surprisingly pleasant, but it was probably aided by the fact that I had just finished hiking up the Sulphur Mountain trail! Seems to be more of a brown ale than a porter? I really didn’t expect the smokiness and cocoa flavours. Its a tad thin in texture but considering there are so few places with a decent "house brand" I’ll gladly take this. | 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 15/20 | Sep 27, 2006 Mmmmmm, this was good! I liked it better than the "standard" Albino rhino by a country mile-- darker colour, more flavour (chocolaty-caramel), and all around more character. Not the best porter by any standard, but an excellent restaurant "house brew". Ughsmash (4079), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Aug 31, 2006 On tap at Earl’s. Poured a deep chestnut brown with a short layer of off-white head. Nose was of lightly-roasted dark chocolate, caramel, and a bit of molasses sweetness with an ancillary herbal presence. Roasty darker chocolate and herbal bitterness upfront in the flavor with an unfortunate bout of diacetyl kicking in toward the back end. Medium-bodied with a bit of a cola feel on the palate. Solid.
