Wulfstan (443), California, USA Jun 13, 2008 This is a very light, but pretty good rice lager. It’s slightly pale golden yellow with a smallish white head that slowly shrinks o lvea no real lace. The aroma is light grain, it’s a bit grassy, with hints of herbas and sulphur, and slightly funky. The taste is light with grain barely dominated by grassy, faintly herbal bitter hops, giving a faint German quality to the character. It’s a bit watery and thin, but decent, rather like a German pilsner mixed with watered-down Moosehead lager. It’s clean with brief aftertaste.
GreatLibations (1265), Sasquatcho, Arizona, USA Sep 4, 2008 Pours bright pale yellow with a tall spritzy head. Mild aromas smelling lager freshness. Full nectar with mellow residual effers. The texture is soft and luscious. This is the best lager I’ve had in a long time/ever. Big malty backbone with a mild hop profile. Very flavorful yet well balanced. Citrus and vanilla bean are prominent. The finish is long with a mild touch of honeysuckle. No offensive nuances at all. This is a great Pale Lager. elihapa (257), Connecticut, USA Jul 29, 2008 From bottle, had at Alan Wong’s. Poured a pale, clear gold with a small head, quite ordinary for a beer recommended by the chef himself! Aroma of grass, grain, and some faint fruit. Flavor is surprisingly one sided and sweet. Palate is not as dry or crisp as I have come to expect from Japanese beers. I’m sure the bottle claims the sweetness is derived from the special rice grain used, but to me unfortunately, this beer just tasted sugary, with a bit of grain and malt. Because it goes OK with food, I’ll give it a little higher rating. gkao007 (26), Jersey City, New Jersey, USA Jul 12, 2008 I found it very pleasant.
Koshi Hikari short grained rice really plays a role in this very aromatic beer.
And when I mean aromatic, I’m emphasizing the "umami".
Golden yellow with quickly disappearing white head.
Well balanced and smooth mouth feel. Great finish. Very easily paired with slightly spicy foods. doubleo (761), San Diego, California, USA Jul 3, 2008 500ml bottle at a sushi place in Sebastopol. Pours light yellow with a thin white head, no lace. Smells sweet and grainy almost like corn but its probably rice. Tastes sweet and malty with lots of cereal flavors. Thin body, crisp carbonation.
