Edwin Tuckers East India Pale Ale

Style: India Pale Ale (IPA)

Poured from a room temperature 500ml bottle into a traditional pint glass. Appearance: Cloudy golden honey in colour, pouring with sizable creamy white head, with good retention. No visible carbonation at all. Aroma: Fruity citrus, with a subtle hoppiness. Slightly acidic yeasty smell. Taste: Sweet at first, almost sugary. Quickly replaced by dry, sharp fruity citric flavours, which are incredibly refreshing and crisp. The finish is bitter and hoppy. Mouthfeel: Medium body. Flat, yet crisp and clean. Drinkability: Not a usual IPA, provides a much cleaner, crisper taste than most. It’s a fairly unusual taste but it really pays off. If you can get your hands on this beer, you won’t regret it.

Bottle. From the back log of ratings that have accumulated over the past two years. Orange and flat with no carbonation.Fruity and well balanced.

bottle, bought at Tucker’s Maltings in summer 2006. Golden yellow, slightly hazy, impressive head, which is very persistent. Fantastic aroma of citrus fruit. Full-bodied, full of flavours of grapefruit, orange, lemon, lime. Solid malty base with a rather dry and hoppy finish. Long-lasting aftertaste. Fantastic brew.

Bottle, picked up at Tuckers Maltings, Newton Abbott 14-11-06. This was super, Loz detected apricot on the aroma which had clearly passed me by, I noticed more citrusy notes in this light amber coloured beer, the hoppiness was a bit of a revalation for me as all too often I think we are a bit reserved in thie arena, wonderfully fresh juicy and flavoursome beer that really had a great kick to it, I really liked this and it was one of my best finds of the week.

London Gathering Nov 05: Nice hoppy pine and citrus nose. Good malt character to back it up too. Nice.

Bottle. Light amber colour with a slim white head. Nice hoppy aroma. Taste is also hoppy and fruity. Mouthfeel is a little disappointing, some what oily, could do with being a bit cleaner and crisper. I’m not sure about the late alcohol kick either. But despite this, I still like it; we need more of the these stronger, hoppier English IPAs. Re-rate, bottle from same batch, but much better. Mouthfeel crisp and clean, nice hoppy and fruit taste, good malt background as well. Well balanced. Very good.

Bottle at London gathering, November 2005, bought from Tuckers Maltings beer shop. Well, here it is - a British made IPA that’s really difficult to place anywhere else. Pale bronze colour Highly hopped on the nose and on the palate. It has some US-style resinous notes. But it manages to retain some British reserve and lacks the vitality (some might say excess) that its US counterparts exhibit. Uses Goldings and Bramling Cross hops, which might have something to do with it, as might the British malts. I, for one, think that British brewers should be rather more adventurous and this is a worthy effort, even if not an unqualified suvccess. Nonetheless, I like it.

Bottle. Dry and slightly hoppy, quite subtle hop characters for an IPA. Slightly stale mouthfeel, with a touch of alcohol showing in the finish. A little dissapointing.
