FishManLA (182), Abita Springs, Louisiana, USA Jun 21, 2008 Pours a clear amber color (on the light side for something that says "dunkel" on the bottle) with a fluffy off-white fairly persistent head which eventually dwindles down to a paper-thin layer of foam with a ring around the edge. Light but lacy lacing is left on the glass. Nose of fresh baked whole wheat bread. Bread/malt taste with a rich, sweet roasted flavor and lacings of caramel and chocolate. Bitter/sweet, creamy finish. A tasty brew.
DrDavid (350), Johnson, Vermont, USA Oct 10, 2008 (Bottle). Sweet malty aroma. Reddish amber body, small off-white head. Flavor is assertively malty, not too sweet, caramel and alcohol notes, bitter finish. Nice. FatPhil (2362), Espoo, Finland Oct 6, 2008 330ml bottle (Cracked Kettle, Amsterdam)
Deep orange, brief head. Sweet malty aroma, not bold enough, alas. Big burnt nutty fruitcake taste. Quite crisp carbonation, not at all cloying, which is an attribute I often appreciate in a bock, it’s absense is almost disappointing. Big tingly noble hop finish, some nuttiness, a touch of ginger, and plenty of burnt malts too. Covers the 6.5% very well, I could knock this back with gay abandon! ALLOVATE (1127), Perth, Australia Sep 26, 2008 From notes alone. Tasted in October ’07. ‘Pours a deep orangey copper, bright and sparkling. Not much head here, just a short serve of cream floating central that keeps. Malty, Bovril, savoury raisins and sultanas, soft cocoa and kelp (aroma). Big rusty malts and melanoidins in the mouth; a touch of cocoa, caramel and toffee, some very savoury fruitcake notes fill it out. Alcohol is evident though quite forgiving under the weight, a little roast almond and rough woody notes end it in the swallow, A little treacle comes into play half way through, very, very savoury, some orange peel. It lingers so long, the carbonation soft and the palate firm with a medium to full body. Nice depth of flavour. A very nice bock, an original (the ’Ur’ part) in fact.’ (33cl [mislabelled 25cl], 13/09/08, Intl Beer Store, W. Leederville) KimJohansen (4294), Copenhagen V, Denmark Sep 14, 2008 Clear amber with medium off white head. Sweet aroma with roasted malt, caramel and fruity notes.
