Commercial Description:
Eisenbahn’s Defumada, very much like the famous smoked lagers of Bamberg, Germany, is brewed with a special, smoked barley malt, giving it a rich, smoky flavor and aroma. A delicious and immensely satisfying lager.
Ideal temperature: from 4 to 6 degrees

Bottle at GBBF 2007. Very attractive chestnut colour, thin beige head. Definitely smoky, but a bit of candy sugar and thin. Over carbonated. Bit disappointing. Good smoke though. Oily.

A Mes rate: Bottle at GBBF. Mid amber with a fast dissapating head. Lovely creamy smoked malt aroma with a little metallic note underneath. Meaty and fatty flavour that is a little too mellow in the smoke department for me. Slightly over carbed mouthfeel. Just a bit on the sweet and oily side but a pleasant surprise over all.

My Bottom Line:
This authentic Rauchbier promotes wooden smokiness throughout a delicate caramel sweetness, a malt-forward profile which attracts the nostrils and lingers all the way to the end of each sip. This long yet polite smokiness is perfect to entertain long sessions.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam skirts the clear amber.
-The smokiness is really redolent of Franconian smoked lagers.
-A subtle peachy, orangey fruitiness roams about.
-This is simple and straightforward, well-brewed and pleasant even after the finish.

Bottle.

Bottled - GBBF 2007. A light amber coloured beer. The aroma is fairly subdued smokiness. Not particularly in your face but just enough smokiness to be pleasant. The taste has smoke and some sweet vanilla notes. Slick but chewy. Smoke is pleasant enough but the palate is too sweet and malty, and verging on cloying.

Clear light orange copper. Fair 1cm off-white head, lasting. Lightly vegetal, herbal smokiness with vienna malts underneath. Toasty, grainy again slightly green palate, but without the associated dryness. Kinda foamy body, without biting. Medium bodied. A pretty underwhelming aroma, generally a bit too sweet for my liking.

Copper, small head that goes bye-bye fairly quickly. Amber malt aroma. Sweet amber malt flavor, some honey, white pepper, caramel. There’s some liquid smoke and dark honey in the aroma and flavor. Reminds me of a honey bock. I agree with Muzzlehatch’s comment about a rich Virginia Ham...maybe with a touch of maple syrup.... A tad bit cloying, heavy and sweet in the finish, with spice notes, but not bad and quite tasty overall.

Bottle: Pours an amber color with a creamy off white head. Aroma, smoky, bready malts. Flavor, bready, caramel malts, the smoke is a lot less noticeable, on the flavor than in the nose. Not really a bad thing though, this was alright.

12 ounce bottle (Batch 6) from Cellars Wine and Spirits on Larpenteur, Roseville MN (June 2007), served a little below cellar temperature from a Hair of the Dog glass. A creamy stable near-white head rests atop the lightly hazy maple body....nose is smoked fruitwood, a hint of rich Virginia ham. light herbal notes (oregano, tarragon) and a bit of caramel, all nicely put together but lacking that special oomph that the best Rauchbiers have, though the complexity grows with additions of sweet cocoa and vanilla as it warms......the body makes up for this small deficiency though, terrifically rich and juicy, burnt caramels and smoky baked fruits, vanilla and soft peat in a lightly oily, faintly alcoholic-textured mouthfeel, a bit of roasted grain and an excellence balance, sweetness slowly turning to faint sour/tartness, a bit of tart cherry amidst the crackling woodmoke and touches of Islay whisky.....carbonation is low, body is quite full. Excellent overall and almost on a par with the Weizenbock, it leaves me wanting more....
