| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 2/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jun 9, 2009 Deep copper coloured body with an orange glow and a very thin, fast-dying tan head. Aroma of smoke, caramel, malt, blood, peat and even smokey raisins. Medium-bodied; Very potent smoked malt flavour with sugar, alcohol, apricots and caramel present, all with strong malt overlays. Aftertaste shows more smoke than anything else, but some of the malt comes through near the end. Overall, a very true-to-the-style beer, definitely showing a lot of smoked peat, some good caramel and a couple of lighter fruit tastes. Definitely good to try, especially if you like the style! I sampled this 12 ounce bottle purchased at Knightly Spirits in Orlando, Florida on 15-February-2009, sampled at home on 08-June-2009. Gregis (1135), Shawnee, Kansas, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jun 7, 2009 This was an unexpected gusher, especially considering this is a filtered lager. I guess they went a tad heavy on the forced CO2. It pours a translucent orange-brown with a frothy beige head that collapses quickly to a thin fizzy skin. The nose is of sweet, smoked caramel malt. This is probably the sweetest smelling smoked that I’ve sampled to date, which is interesting. On the medium side of light-bodied it is fairly slick yet not unsubstantial on the tongue with a light twang at the finish. Much like the nose, the flavor is of sweet smoked malt with a light caramel quality to it. Any hops present are well hidden, keeping this beer fairly simple in its flavor profile, but it seems to be successful at what it’s trying to do. This would be a nice compliment to summer grilling and a very solid choice for introducing non-beer geeks to the concept of a smoked beer. vyvvy (2068), Hazelwood, Missouri, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 25, 2009 Pours clear dark amber with a white head. The aroma has lager malt, some sweetness and it is light on the smoke. Medium crisp body with light prickly carbonation. The flavor starts with smooth creamy lager malt with light toast and only enough smoked malt to be noticed. The finish has a touch of hops and the clean malt. marcus (1896), Sacramento, California, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Apr 28, 2009 This reddish brown ale poured with a rich beige head that bubble away pretty fast. There is a roasted malt aroma and a smoky caramel malt flavor that is fairly pleasant. jcr (1179), Jasper, Indiana, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Apr 22, 2009 Bottle. Small, white head atop a light bronw/copper body. Light, malty sweet aroma of caramel and toast. Not much else, including smoke which doesn’t show up until you taste the beer. The flavor was moderately sweet and lightly bitter. It fnished sweet with a note of smoke taste. Medium body with a velvety texture. Lively carbonation. Too bad this beer is so weighted toward sweetness because the smoke is pleasant and not overpowering (no bacon notes here). A little more bitterness would have helped. Nonetheless, it’s a drinkable beer. SpudClampDawg (1027), Jasper, Indiana, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 3/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Apr 22, 2009 12 oz bottle This was a slow gusher, but no apparent infection. Copper colored pour with a small, white head. The aroma isn’t necessarily off putting, it just doesn’t offer much. Kind of just stale malt aroma, which is strange, because the body is decently loaded with smoked and caramel malts. The body is medium build, but the lager yeast keeps this an easy drinker. The smoke is nice, not overpowering, but nothing too special. A decent beer. OD40oz (602), Box Elder, South Dakota, USA
| 0.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 1/10 | 4/5 | 1/10 | 1/5 | 1/20 | Apr 22, 2009 I’m not a real fan of smoked beers so this was not my favorite. Poured an amber orange with a quickly diminishing off-white head. Smelled like a bottle of liquid smoke. Very putrid artificial smoke taste. In short, I would rather tongue Smokey the Bear’s bunger than drink this crap again.
