| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Nov 21, 2008 12 oz. bottle, "Batch No. 06." Pours a slightly murky brown with a chalky layer of foam. No worries about smell, the smoked malt is right there and pretty much equal to the German style. Smell also has a bit of phenol to it. Well, that’s the chance with an undated import bottle (and also a characteristic of smoked beer). But I do find it pretty tasty. Smoky, but not overwhelmed with bacon or… no, there’s a distinct thread of gouda cheese at the back of my palate. But it’s worth finding. Not very complex, but this has a strong malt backbone with some sweetness to give it more roundness than "just" a smoked beer. Sticky malt finish. illidurit (896), Santa Cruz, California, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Nov 3, 2008 Poured into a seidel. Clear copper color with an ecru head that fizzes out pretty quick. No lacing. Aroma is salted meat with a mild phenolic plastic note. Some sweet caramel tempers the smoke, making this beer less intense than the Schlenkerla rauchbiers. Flavor is pretty much identical. Nice light smokiness, not like drinking a Christmas ham. Light body and pretty clean. Drinkable and even kinda refreshing. danielyabu (297), União da Vitória, Brazil
