(12oz bottle, Batch 36) Minimal head that entirely vanishes, atop clear brown-black body. Aroma is medium sweet, caramel, coffee/roast, light chocolate. Taste is moderately sweet, coffee, caramel, light roast, chocolate. Smooth light-medium body, undercarbonated, light stickiness.

Nutty, roasted aroma. Dark in appearance with no lasting head. Very malty taste. Carbonation is a bit off. Strange, dry finish.

12oz bottle, batch 36, imbibed on 7/30/07. Vigorous pour yields about a 1/2" layer of quickly disappearing foam atop a mahogany colored liquid. Aroma is roasted malt with hints of caramel. Flavor starts out good for the style, nice hints of roastiness, good maltiness and just falls apart into wet cardboard with a little bit of smokiness in the finish.

Pours basically light black, with quickly fading light tan head. Smell is malty and very nutty. Taste is nutty, slight notes of coffee, low carbonation and rich with a light nutty bitter finish. Interesting beer for sure, and reminds me of a thick nut brown ale.

Bottle from River’s Bend. Poured dark brown with an average frothy off-white head that was mostly diminished with fair lacing. Medium roasted dark chocolate malty aroma. Medium bodywith a smooth texture. Medium dark roasted bittersweet flavor with a medium bittersweet finish of average duration.

From a twist-off 12 oz. bottle, batch number (36) along the right side of label, sampled in a pilsener glass. A ruby hued dark brown appearance with a small, tight pale tan head that quickly dissipates into a fine lacing. Aromas of roasted chocolate, burnt grains and sugars, a nice kick of wafting dark roasted coffee, that freshly brewed coffee scent that wakes you up in the morning. Pleasant roasted malty taste, but also bit of a letdown compared to the aroma, not as rich and full as I was hoping, nor as smooth as I would have liked, medium bodied mouthfeel with a rough dryness, bittersweet chocolate, burnt sugar, bitter cold dark coffee, the hops are pretty light, just a soft spiciness in the finish, overall, a decent, but far from great, dunkel, I would buy it if it was on sale, I also would like to try this from the tap, but there are several German dunkels I would choose over this.
