Pours a semi-clear brownish amber brew with a thin tan head that slowly dissipates. Aroma of roasted dark malt, a touch of banana esters, Baker’s chocolate and some caramel, Taste is medium bodied, light carbonated, with flavors of roasted dark malt, some flowery hops, a touch of chocolate and roasted nuts. Finish is semi-sweet, smooth with a light caramel aftertaste that quickly disappears. Ughsmash (4060), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA

Poured clear, deep reddish-brown with a swirly dustin gand a light ring of off-white head. The aroma picked up a nice blend of sweeter chocolate, drawn caramel, and molasses.. a little smoke as an accent piece. The flavor was quite similar and equally enjoyable.. sweet, smoke-accented chocolate and molasses at the core with toasted grains and caramel extending toward the edges.. not much bitterness at all.. sweet, dry finish. Light-medium bodied on the palate and very sweet (but well done).. the dry finish was rather refreshing. Good stuff! HogTownHarry (4020), Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, Canada
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Mar 29, 2009 Bottle (12oz). Very deep ruby pour, average frothy off-white head. Dry leafy aroma, generic roast, a hint of peat and cocoa. Tastes like a nice light mild - no alcohol, roast coffee bean and cocoa, dry bitterness to even it out. Average body, silky, somewaht still, dry roasty finish. I like it - sessionable. egajdzis (3631), Spring Mount, Pennsylvania, USA

| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 1, 2007 Batch 34 bottle consumed on 4/27/07 Medium-beige head is one-finger in height and very foamy, receding fairly rapidly to parial cover, then ring, then nothing. No lacing. Pretty predictable appearance, seeing that it’s filtered, force carbed (and probably pasteurised). Clear, medium-brown color has some beige and chestnut notes. Smells a bit stale and rather nutty. Some old coffee grinds lying around, with light hazelnut notes and a bit of earthiness. Caramel makes its way forth, with warming, adding a bit more firm maltiness and there’s a reasonably apparent lager yeast finish, though it’s somewhat muted by a lingering dryness/staleness. Medium to medium-weak strength of aroma. No flaws, nor any alcohol perceived. Sweet caramel, with light nuttiness and a touch of coffee. Seems to pass rather quickly, but on the finish there was a distinct note of light char and toffee mixing together. It added a nice chewiness and drew out the flavor longer than is usual for these simple beers. Medium to medium-light in body, rather simple in its sweetness, with no flaws. Filtered texture, however, is a bit of a let down, as is the fizzy carbonation that gives the beer quite a bit of looseness and wateriness, moreso than I would expect for the style, as it greatly detracts from any crispness. Very well-brewed stuff, and lagered properly to-boot, but aside from a little extra oomph of flavors/complexity, I’m still back to harping on the texture.
