Savannah, Ga. - Habersham Beverage Warehouse - 12 oz bottle. Dark copper pour, khaki colored head, some lacing. Sweet aroma - some chocolate, raisins, hints of molasses. Flavor is quite full-bodied - some pipe tobacco, raisins, caramel, cola. Good rib sticking Dunkel. Thick enough mouthfeel. Color me slightly impressed.

12 oz bottle purchased at John’s Grocery in Iowa City. Poured a clear dark brown color. Only a bit of light came through creating ruby colored highlights. Head was light tan and dissipated quickly, settling to a skimpy ring. There wasn’t any lace left behind at then end. Aroma was a pleasant mix of dark chocolate, roasty malt, and hints of molasses and smoke. Sweet and roasty on the tongue with a dominant chocolate flavor. There was also light smoked bacon and a touch of coffee. I was pleasantly surprised by this one.

In the bottle from Beertopia. Pours a dark brownish black color with an ecru colored head. Has a mild roasted aroma and an even milder roasted malt flavor. This would have rated higher if they called it a Vienna style as it seems to be closer to the mark on that one. Has a slight bit of toasted flavor that works for it in the finish, but overall, a middle of the road beer.

Bottle. Dark ruby black beer with a tan head. Caramel, malt, and slight hay aroma. Caramel malt with a bit of roastiness and chocolate and backing smokiness. Medium body. Lingering caramel and earth with malt.

This was a nice dunkel, not as smooth as some, slightly watery, but still had a good flavor. Lightly roasty chocolate flavor that builds as it warms. Fruity finish with just a light hopping to balance it out. Pours a beautiful mahogany with a soft khaki head.

(Rating #1868)
