dpjuart (397), Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 17, 2008 3/15/08 - Mystery pack from D’s courtesy/shared with Naka. Pours black with amber hues, small fizzy, khaki head. Nose is sweet caramel, biscuit and chocolate, touch of roast. Surprisingly not bad. Nice caramel and chocolate flavor, a bit watery with dry, crisp finish. Not bad.
cbkschubert (1423), I-10 exit 299 (under bridge), Arizona, USA Apr 29, 2008 12 oz. bottle from Plaza Liquors - Pours a dark brown color with a one and a half finger thick light tan head. Very light lacing. Aroma is roasted malt and dark esters. Flavor is roasted malt with hints of coffee and smoke. This beer is quite easy on the palate. An easy drinking medium body beer. Worth a try. JohnnyOS (599), Golden, Wisconsin, USA Apr 27, 2008 Pours dark reddish amber with off-white head. Aroma of dark chocolate & roasted malt. Flavor to match with a hint of caramel and smoke. As I pour this brew a nice aroma of caramelized malt, toasted grain and light chocolate wafts to my nose. The beer pours with an initially three finger thick, amber tinged, tan colored head in my 25cl tulip glass. The beer shows a dark, amber-brown color, but shows a brilliantly clear, cherry-red color when held up to the light. A deeper quaff of the aroma yields more, concentrated aromas as previously noted; light coffee aromatics, some light raisin notes and some berry aromatics are noticeable, though the roast character tends to dominate the nose if you spend more than a second smelling it.
Quite dry tasting up front, though a bit of caramelized malt sweetness creeps in towards the finish. Nice and roasted tasting, more leaning towards a nicely toasted malt character that burnt flavors. After my first sip a bit more of the malt sweetness becomes more noticeable, though not so much as to characterize this as a sweet beer. Quite light bodied, this beer is very quaffable though it does have a presence & heft in the middle. Light dusty cocoa flavors, some bitter dark grain notes as well as a light hop bitterness are found in the finish. This has a nice raisin-like maltiness to it at times, in fact a nice malt sweetness really does pick up here as the beer warms up (or perhaps it is my palate recovering from that overly sweet Pils I just had).
A tasty beer; I like how full flavored yet quaffable it is. It has more roast character than is typical of a Dunkel Lager, but I wouldn’t call it a Schwarzbier either; either way though it is tasty.
Purchased: Plaza Liquors, Tucson AZ tennisjoel (645), Shakopee, Minnesota, USA Apr 14, 2008 Dark reddish brown pour. A nice off white head with some good lacing. Dark chocolate and roasty notes. The flavor is more of the same. Some caramel/toffee flavor. Also some light smoke notes. Very clean and crisp on the palate. A pretty decent dunkel. Cybercat (321), USA Apr 10, 2008 Aroma is rich, malty and smoky, more like a stout than a lager. It pours a dark translucent brown, not as dark as a stout or porter, but still appetizing and with a thick, fluffy, persistent head. Flavor is crisp, fuller than most lagers I have tried and with a definite smoky overtone. It feels just a little thin, but as far as lagers go it is outstanding.
