emacgee (1859), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA May 10, 2007 Poured a hazy peachy amber. The head was thick, creamy and a bit yellow (see pic). The aroma showed mellow fruit, plum, fig. Some dry alcohol too. The flavor shows the 11%, some musty fig, and sweet fruit. The palate is dry and warm and the finish goes down warm and heats the stomach.
moejuck (1165), Ohio, USA May 10, 2007 Bottle from Turdferguson. Heavy malt and light spices in the aroma. Copper body with a nice head. Full palate. Heavy malt, some more malt, and a little bit of heat after that. Pretty one-dimensional, but nice flavor. TURDFERGUSON (1594), Carrboro, North Carolina, USA May 8, 2007 so here we are. the old ’malt bomb.’ thats what they used to call this beer at the moan and dove. maybe thay still do. I had do drink it then when I was doing my ’list.’ and I remember it being much more powerful than this that I am sipping on tonight. Pours a golden amber with a thin white head. Nose of apple juice, cotton candy, ground black pepper and alcohol. Flavor is sweet and malty, as would be expected, but not as "in yo face mo fo" as I expected. Just kind blah, which is rare for an eisbock. Lightly syruppy mouthfeel. porterhouse (1148), Alna, Maine, USA Apr 29, 2007 (Bottle from <A HREF=http://www.ratebeer.com/Place/maine/portland/downeast-beverage-co/974.htm target=blank>Downeast Beverage Co.) Hot vanilla sweetness...Pours clear slightly reddish orange with one finger of biege head. Nose is sweet sugar-candy malt. Palate is smooth and syrupy. Taste is quite hot, lots of vanilla and sugar candy sweetness. Like drinking a hot liquer. I like this style but this one I wouldn’t recommend. Crafty07 (391), Florence, Kentucky, USA Apr 27, 2007 I don’t speak German. So it’s a good thing this bronze heady fluid poured out of this brown bottle was an excellent eisenbock and not some type of poison. I don’t know if the Kulmbacher Brewery sells beer for export to English speaking nations, but I’m glad I grabbed a bottle of this.
I read with amusment the last reviewer who used this strong beer to assist him in returning to sleep.
I"m sure an 11% beer can do that...but then again, so can Robotussin.
To me, you dont’ START your driniking off with a beer like this. You have to make sure the ’pump is primed’. Once you get tastebuds ready, this goes down very well and is a much more pleasent experiance. Ron (1002), Rochester, New York, USA Apr 23, 2007 I’ll remember this one because I really needed a strong beer today. I worked the night and while trying to sleep in the morning, my wife fell while trying to paint the bathroom and I had to help paint it. Then soon as I get back to bed, my daughter in college calls saying she needs my money.(this 3 weeks after her telling me that she has plenty of money and can spend it any way she wants) Oh, the beer had a very alcoholic flavor and I did not like it very much, but it did the job and got me back to sleep. OhioDad (2491), Hilliard, Ohio, USA Apr 15, 2007 12oz bottle pours amber with a short beige head that was rather short lived. Aromas of alcohol, honey, and some caramel with a kiss of molasses. Flavor is caramel, molasses, alcohol, honey, and some grape skins. Full bodied with a sticky sweet palate and some alcohol heat at the finish. Glouglouburp (2778), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Apr 5, 2007 Clear copper body topped by a short-lived beige head. Sweet alcohol on the nose. Taste is whisky-kind-of-malt wrapped in brown sugar with a few drops of vanilla to hold it up together. As the beer warms up, some berries flavours and a pleasant woody (cedar) flavour sneak in. Hop character is non-existent. All that would be fine if it wasn’t for the crushing alcohol presence and cloying sweetness. EKU 2.1
