mjg74 (1995), La Mesa, California, USA Jul 28, 2005 Bottled. Pours a medium amber color. Aroma is malty and sweet with a little bit of fruitiness. Malty sweet flavor. Some dark fruitiness as well. Some roasted maltiness in the finish. Alcohol is not too noticable. Enjoyable brew. Retorp (2154), Tampa, Florida, USA Jul 23, 2005 Updated: May 19, 2007May 19, 2007 Re-rate

Musy, stewed fruit and malt aroma has an edge of cherry liquer to it. The body is a transparent orange/amber and the thumb thick white, diminishes rapidly. Dry fore is malt laden with fruit notes on the edges and a sort of toasty, spent grainy flavor. Alcohol and very faint maple and caramel notes make up the finish. I really hated this the first time I had it a year or so ago, but I find it much more palatable. I’ve also learned that it isn’t really an Eisbock just a very strong lager.

I have only had a few eisbocks, but this is the first I did not like. Way too present alcohol made it undrinkable. And what flavors there are a kinda malt/caramel sweetness are buried in that alcohol. If there was an Avery label on this I’d totally believe it was an Avery beer. RateandPillage (417), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Jul 18, 2005 Copper-red-gold in color with good beige head. Aroma mostly of cider-apple and alcohol. A lot of these two in the flavor as well, and the alcohol presence is not disguised as well as others of this magnitude. Not too crazy about this one. BillKismet (1896), Seattle, Washington, USA Jul 17, 2005 Orange-amber, almost salmon colored, and lacking a head so it almost looks like a tinted wine. Hearty alcoholic malt aroma that reappears in the flavor. A great, warming , heavy on the palate, winter beer. Like a fine, malty wine. The odor is the same. Second and third swigs did not improve my feelings. Very disappointed. I let the drain sample the rest. Walt (2289), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jul 4, 2005 2002: Pour is clear amber with a nice tan head...smell is smell is musty, some apples as well...just smells sort of old...raisins too...taste is rich and thickly sweet...caramel, molasses...seems quite simple... puzzl (2579), New York, New York, USA Jun 30, 2005 Smells like apple juice. Nothing else, just apple juice. Develops zero head, and looks like dark, rotten apple juice. The taste is slighty redeeming, with a decent malt profile and a controlled sweetness. Palate is nice too, but you can really feel and taste the alcohol in this beer. Carbonation, though slight, stings a little. Not too thrilled with this one at all. EDIT: This beer really sucks. I just poured it down the drain.
