Eyedrinkale (3209), Astoria, New York, USA May 4, 2005 Bottle shared with Bret. Murky amber color with a small head. Awesome malty aroma. Taste is sweet, yet dry with some dried fruits. Slightly smokey and really drinkable. ojclark (69), Santa Monica, California, USA May 3, 2005 Updated: May 4, 2005Bottle. Roasty, malty, burnt caramel aroma with hints of vanilla, marzipan and slight alcohol. Clear amber/brown color with a thick tan head that lasted quite a while. Raisiny, malty, slightly sweet with some alcohol in flavor. Hop bitterness became apparent in aftertaste but was overshadowed up front. Effervescent with fine carbonation. Full bodied, almost chewy but not cloying. Medium finish with some alcohol apparent in aftertase along with bitterness and some sweetness. Big and complex but very well executed and well balanced. joergen (8429), Frederiksberg, Denmark Apr 30, 2005 Amber colour with a small fast disappearing head.
Aroma of is dominated by alcohol with notes of malts and caramel.
Sweet flavour with lots of alcohol, dried fruit and caramel. Slightly bitter finish.
Bigsilky (322), Charleston, USA Apr 26, 2005 Wow, this certainly needs a year or two in the bottle. I was just blown away. very syrupy, port like, and very strong. The 11 % doesn’t hide itself here. Almost like turning the termostat up as you drink it. The hops are very sharp and distance themselves from the malt. I really don’t believe that it’s cloying or oversweet. It really reminds me of Samiclaus, and at a fraction of the price. I think that with a year of cellaring you have yourself a wonderful night cap in the dead of winter. ElJefe (553), Rochester, New York, USA Apr 23, 2005 Medium brown with an off white head. Aroma of sweet apples and banana. Flavor of banana, bubblegum, cotton candy a bit too sweet and cloying and too syrupy. Miguel (1181), Saint-Ours, Quebec, Canada Apr 19, 2005 Robe dorée à cuivrée très claire surmontée d’une mousse blanche automatiquement disparue. Arômes de malts munich et d’alcool. Saveurs de jus de raisin, d’alcool, de fruits rouges, de caramel. Les arômes embaument carrément la bouche. Houblon de soutien. Très intéressant... Mklein818 (161), Etterbeek, Virginia, Belgium Apr 1, 2005 An old favorite--from the days before I knew anything about beer.
This stuff has the consistency of 10-W-40. It is badly overhopped, but some decent brandy flavors manage to emerge.
Must be drunk very cold--and this lacks the finesse of the Belgians of similar strength (Kasteel, Bush, etc) tomhenderson (126), Carolinas area, USA Mar 27, 2005 12 oz bottle. Bright copper in color; crystal clear with no head retention. Slight legs. Aroma is rich in sweet malt and pleasantly alcoholic. Taste is similar and very warming as it goes down. This product pretty well follows BJCP guidelines, but I’m simply not a fan of Eisbocks.
