chauvan1 (3), USA does not count Sep 14, 2004 Updated: Sep 15, 2004This being my first Eisbock, I have no other benchmark to use, but my overall impressions are that I definetly wouldn’t want more than one of these in an evening. Comparing this to a dopplebock, the nose was too vibrant with alcohol, almost a port type of bite. Beautifully clear, but where’s the head?? Found the taste of this to be almost medicinal; sweet and bitter all at the same time. Found by the end of the glass, I regretted the purchase. As it got warmer, more of the medicine taste came through. Difficult to finish. Joeh (1908), Buckinghamshire, England Sep 12, 2004 Bottle bought in Belgium. Pours orange, no head. Syrupy but not really cloying, alcohol is well hidden. Nice. rajendra82 (698), Alpharetta, Georgia, USA Sep 9, 2004 The pour is orange gold like a Belgian Trippel, but does not possess the signature foamy head of that style. The carbonation is lively and fizzy, but not a head to be seen anywhere. The aroma is perfumey alcohol with a floral hop hint. The taste is sweet and spicy with up front alcohol and an assertive hop bitterness. The mouthfeel is very drying with a strong burn at the back of the throat. Nice and drinkable beer, but lacks the roasty complexity of a good dopplebock, or the subtle hidden punch packed by a Belgian Trippel. frylock (998), Buffalo, New York, USA Sep 4, 2004 Dark orange in color with basically no head at all. Rich malty aroma with plenty of toffee and sugary sweet notes. Very sweet malty flavors upfront, some medicinal notes. Some vanilla and woody dryness. Finish is very hot. Too heavy on the alcohol and lacks balance. heemer77 (4294), Savannah, Missouri, USA Sep 1, 2004 Updated: Sep 2, 2004Has a nice darker amber hue and a very small head that disspates quicky. The aroma is warming with apples and some brandy. Not nearly as sweet as some other eisbocks. Has some bready notes with vanilla, oak and some brown sugar. The alcoholic finish is a little strong for my tastes. This would make a perfect winter warmer. I am still not a big fan of the style. 11026 (1799), Alabama, USA Aug 26, 2004 Bottle. Poured with a thin white head, quick to dissipate. Deeper orange in color. Aroma is sweet and malty. Mouthfeel is thin. Alcohol is detectable. Warming. Hops finish long and mildly. Not bad, not great. Cornfield (4892), Oak Forest, Illinois, USA Aug 10, 2004 After pouring, the head disappeared before I could note its color. The beer’s coloring was a pleasant orange/amber, but the accompanying aroma was a bit too sweet for me. This sweetness carried through too heavily in the taste, almost overriding the malt, and clung to the back of my throat long after most had splashed into my belly. It was warming, all right. The alcohol taste was a tad too strong, reminding me more of the old days when we used to drop a shotglass of bourbon into our steins than it did of even a barley wine. beerslayer (753), New Jersey, USA Aug 8, 2004 This is a ok Eisbock. Sweet, sherry, and malty flavors. Finishes syrupy, chewy, and warming.
