Pailhead (2572), Allen Park, Michigan, USA Apr 24, 2004 Updated: Oct 2, 2004Bottle: Virtually no head and no lacing. Aroma is of raisins, sugar and alcohol. Not positive since I was in a dimly lit bar, but color seems to be an amber. Taste at first is dominated by raisin and slight alcohol. As I drink it alcohol tastes becomes stronger to the point that it becomes too dominant. Label states something along the lines of just sweet enough but I think it starts too sweet and ends with too much of an alcohol taste. I'd prefer something else. This is the worst beer I've ever had. The only reason it ties with another is because the aroma is pretty good. Syd (888), Waconia, Minnesota, USA Apr 22, 2004 Bottle pours a dark amber color with a one inch head that goes away fast. The aroma is of sugar malt. The flavor is or malt, maple syrup, and more malt. The palate is quite syrup like (could have this on pancakes). Overall, this is a real swillin and chillin kind o brew. sloth (1657), Ceciltucky, Co., Maryland, USA Apr 11, 2004 Small tan head, fades quickly. Clear amber color. Malty, fruity, alcoholly nose. Full bodied, slick mouthfeel. sweet malt flavors. Hints of chocolate and anise with the alc. being fairly evident, warming as it goes down. Finish is sweet and bitter at the same time. ChazyRPh (571), Chazy, New York, USA Apr 2, 2004 Bottle...clear amber pour with no head. Aroma of raisins and macerated pit fruit (Apricots, peaches, etc,,,) Clean alcoholic flavor with those same flavors as the nose, raisins and pit fruit. Also a little smokiness noted. Dickinsonbeer (3434), Hoboken, New Jersey, USA Mar 31, 2004 Deep gold/ light copper color with a slight head. Aroma is of malt and alcohol. Flavor is thick, malty and slightly warming from the high alcohol. Overall slightly cloying due to the high alcohol. Pigfoot (2226), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Mar 22, 2004 I've been hanging on to this bottle a long time, last from a 6-pack bought over 13 months ago...time to send this one home...
Clear, bold amber hue, fiercely buzzing foam on top that evaporates instantly into nothingness...aroma bespeaks of alcohol before you even try to smell it, but let's give it a close sniff anyway...cherries, booze, brandy, cognac, cough syrup, Jagemeister, brilliantly burnished, all sweetness and liquory, and still appealing.
Taste: huge impact on the palate, a jolt of cherry schnapps, some buzzing hops, thick, sweet malt, and hot alcohol feel. Fills the palate fully, sending this sharp, bright sensation around all the corners of the senses.
Defies most common notions of "what is beer", that's for sure.
Body is full, finish is long and strong, character is memorable all the way. Not a beer I'd turn to often, and not quite halfway into it, the booze is now in full control, starting to worm into the brain and begin the process of drunkening...nighty-night, and goodbye, yaddy-dee, dee, dee, dee-dah...lovely nightcap, or a cudgel, ... fly (1331), austin, Tejas, USA Mar 18, 2004 Yadda yadda yadda used to sell it - bla bla bla - could grab a bottle from case in winter and drink it - so what? I really didn't appreciate this despite liking so many beers back when. Good friend I worked with brought me one to see what I would think now. Much more appreciated, but overall it seemed like a monochord symphony all about the malt. Glorious malt. Superb malt. Excellent malt. I know there's more to it, but that's what struck me. Were it to incorporate the slightest of another complimentary element I think it could battle for a very high position. PorterPounder (3132), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Mar 18, 2004 Light copper-orange appearance. Alcohol and candy nose. Little to no head. Alcohol is very evident. Has elements of sherry, cotton candy and some rum soaked raisins. Not for the faint of heart. A little bit rough around the edges.
