Commercial Description:
This world-famous beer has the character and richness to stand in for fine sherry or port. Just the right degree of sweetness - never cloying; wonderfully aromatic and warming. EKU 28 is the one whenever something good and strong is needed.

Orange color with a small head. Aroma is very sweet, citrus and candy. Flavor is very sweet, syrupy, cloying, toffee, candy, acidic. Lots of alcohol warmth.

Draught. Honestly a fairly nice eisbock. Poured a still copper colout with no real head. Big aroma of caramel and molassas plus a little alcohol. Huge caramel flavour plus some more sweetness from brown sugar. Finishes with some alcohol warmth. I thought it was very enjoyable.

bottle thanks to bitbucket. caramel pour with some off white head. aroma is intensly sweet malt, bubblegum like, somewhat fruity, and still a tad grainy. flavor is exactly the same with a small malt / alcohol bite. it really reminds me of the huge budweiser private reserve that i had around christmas a couple years back.

Clear, deep amber appearance with a large tan head that faded quickly and left modest lacing. Toffeeish, sweet malt and ripe fruit aroma. Woodsy/earthy taste mingles with the alcohol, giving it a dessert wine-like edge. Sweetness linger through to the finish, with the alcohol dominating the aftertaste.

Rerate (16/09/2007), 33cl bottle, Leffe goblet, bbe 01-01-09. Pours a clear brassy hue with orange highlights, covered by a thin, foamy off-white head, which dissipates into nothingness. Initial aroma is of treacle, cherry confiture and alcohol. Some sherry (veering to cardboard at times) oxidation and raw sugar then come into play. Noting “pain aux raisins” could sum up much of the aroma. The flavour is massively sweet as was expected, like cake covered with an inch of cream cheese icing. Yes, indeed there is a little cream cheese type tang going on, which actually isn’t so bad because it offsets the sweetness a little. But only a little. The finish lets out a gasp of cherry acidity, but finishes overly sweet and lacking any noticeable hops in the grand scheme of things. The alcohol doesn’t burn, but there’s no mistaking it’s presence at the same time. Heavy body, with a sticky texture and carbonation struggling to keep up. Aside from the transparent alcohol, and the light cardboard element, there’s nothing bad about this beer; but for an 11% dessert sipper, I expect a lot more complexity and nuance. I’ve had fine sherry and port, this misses the mark by a mile, almost to the point of being useless outside of “bang for your buck”. And it gets slightly metallic as it warms, so that doesn’t help either. Though it does pick a rather nice tupelo honey note. Okay, a little better than average, all told. Original score: 8/4/8/4/16 = 4.0

33 cL bottle, snifter. Chocolate, molasses, cookie malt (M); prunes, tangerine, sherry, ruby port, anise aromas. Nose is dark, sweet and fruity. Tall, off-white, head is creamy and slowly diminishing and sits on a gorgeous amber body. Monstrously sweet flavor thins to a heavily sweet flavor. I, in fact, did not find it cloying. Comes off more drinkable than the Eggenberg beers. Heavy body, oily/creamy texture, soft carbonation. The bottom line is: um...get crunked?

Amber colored, no head. Aroma of malt and alcohol. Flavor is almost like someone dump vodka into a dobbelbock. Somewhat sweet with an alcohol burn. Dry alcohol finish.

Had this tonight at Papago. Deep dark copper with a sweet malt aroma and flavor. Alcohol is heavy on the finish. Good for siping but much to sweet for me.

How odd. A big, hoppy German barleywine. Pours a clear copper, with no head and lace that quickly disappears without a trace. Nose is nothing but alcohol. Taste is well, alcohol and hops. Mouth feel is big and round and full. I would have given it a higher OA rating, except that the alcohol content is so high that this one "costs" me two IPAs, which I would like a whole lot better! // rerated when I realized that I poured half of the beer out. Drain pour can’t get a 3.0. This has too much alcohol and too little of anything else. // And tried it again, and if anything less interesting. I no longer sense hops, just alcohol and sugar.
