Commercial Description:
This world-famous beer has the character and richness to stand in for fine sherry or port. Just the right degree of sweetness - never cloying; wonderfully aromatic and warming. EKU 28 is the one whenever something good and strong is needed.

Bottled. Clear amber colour. Very quickly diminishing head. Aroma of dark fruits, most prominently plums and strawberries. Otherwise malty and sweet. At first the taste is dominated by sweetness with a malty base. Then dark fruits come through, mostly plums, but no strawberries. Finish is suprisingly hoppy and bitter for such a sweet bock-beer. Mediumbodied with a normal mouthfeel. I don´t know why this beer gets such a bad rep from many people. I, for myself, liked it, especially the aroma.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t this used to be about 14% ? Anyway, it is one of the better beers at being able to handle the high alcohol content. Much better than Samichlaus. The original ice beer!

Poured into an oversized balloon-style wine glass, it is a perfectly clear copper/orange color. Very little foam, just flecks of bubbles here and there. I have never noticed a beer catch the light like this one, it seems to throw back an equal amount of soft orange light. I picked up the glass to look at it, and my hand was bathed in soft orange light. Smells terrific - hot alcohol and honey. Bold malt, considerably sweet and a bit fruity. More hot alcohol. It isn’t cloying, so there must be hops in there too, but really, the flavor is all malt and alcohol. It almost seems that the alcohol flavor itself is a bit bitter and contrasts nicely with the sweetness. More alcohol and honey in the aftertaste. Very still beer, only slight carbonation is evident.

Translucent copper color, head disappeared quickly. Nose of sweet caramel and alcohol. Initial sweet taste finished with alcohol and alcohol. Was a tad sticky toward the end of the glass. Definetly a sipper.

essentially no head, very low carbonation. sweet malty alcohol aroma, sweet malty alcohol body. not particularly complex, in fact not much here besides caramel malts and alcohol--maybe somes pineappley notes. label says not cloying; i disagree. uck. like drinking a liqueur than a beer.

This beer tasted like a dunkel that had been distilled. While I know nothing about the history of this beer, it struck me that this beer may have been launched when high-alc alone was enough to distinguish you from other beers. But in a marketplace where we have an abundance of dubels, tripels, and quads, in addition to barley-wine, old ale and other high-alc styles, I’m not sure this beer measures up so well. It poured with little to no head. It had a sweet malt aroma, and a pleasant malt/bourbon/caramel/spice flavor. Not bad, but not as complex/nuanced as I was led by the label description to expect. Mouthfeel was full and slightly puckery. This beer is not extremely drinkable, but I don’t think its supposed to be!

Bottle. Very malty smell, a little bit like molasses, moderate alcoholic. A small off-white fizzy head, fast and fully diminishing, a dark red body. Moderate bitter start and finish on the palate, average duration. Heavy alcoholic taste, medium to full body, oily texture and a flat carbonation.

Strong sickening sweet alcohol aroma. the flavor was equally bad. It reminded me of a really bad Samichlaus. Pretty color, but no head and a syrupy feel.
