Commercial Description:
This world-famous beer has the character and richness to stand in for fine sherry or port. Just the right degree of sweetness - never cloying; wonderfully aromatic and warming. EKU 28 is the one whenever something good and strong is needed.

Bottle bought in Belgium. Pours orange, no head. Syrupy but not really cloying, alcohol is well hidden. Nice.

A very pretty orange color with a fizzy beige head that quickly disappears. Lies still in the glass. A very sweet nose, cotton candy, port wine, wood. Wow, you know this is going to be exploding with flavor. Bam, malts all over the place, specialized malts....crystal for sure. Alcohol isn't a bit shy, it's right there like a siren tempting you to sail on to the rocky shore. Make no mistake, this is a dangerous beer, lip-smackingly sweet but packs a whollop of a punch. Why is Anchor Old Foghorn in a 7 oz bottle and this in a 12? This is THE ski lodge beer, a winter warmer that can be, no....should be shared by two people. It is like sipping brandy, definately a dessert beer. Call me a Masochist, but I like it!

8/2/04. Poured out of 11.2 oz. bottle, bought at Holiday Wine Cellar in Escondido, CA 7/25/04. Pours a bright amber orange with slight, creamy yellow head that dissipates. Some tiny, lumpy bits of lacing. Looks very full, and I love that color. Nose is a bit faint, but contains rich, bold alcohol and a big lagery malt scent with a crisp edge to it. Totally feels like the big badass malt liquor it is. Some resin, dark honey, and a touch of caramel. Flavor is very big, with nice subtleties at the same time. Huge alcohol bite and a big sort of dark nutty, bready, and doughy flavor. Roasted peanuts with no salt. Toasted hazelnuts. Pretty good, especially considering the ratings on here. Body is very full, moderately carbonated, lightly burning from alcohol, and contains a full phantom glow of caramel on the finish. Also some weird earthiness and-- dare I say-- a mushroomy flavor (??). . . Both raw and sauteed button mushrooms. Long and strong, but not exactly my cup of tea. Still pretty good. Instantly warming, makes me feel good drinking it. But the flavor, while respectable, can take some getting used to. I'll try!

Aroma is rich and full of honey buttered sweetness with a touch of molasses. In the glass, she is amber with golden highlights and a light, off-white head. The flavor is smooth, sweet and luscious, but does harbor a medicinal quality. I taste candy corn, vanilla and an oaken quality. The palate is initially smooth and silky, but turns a bit acrid on the finish. Not a champ, not a chump; rather a distiguished beverage that is easy and satisfying to anyone that doesn’t pay too much attention to detail. That being said, the details exposed, this beer falls just a little on the safe side of forgiveness; may we all be so lucky.

Can courtesy of Piscator34: Poured a deep burgundy color beer with a small off-white foamy head with OK retention. Aroma of sweet cookie dough with some dry plums was very interesting and enjoyable. Some sweet cookie malt with some plums and dry figs characteristics, which made this very enjoyable, also dominated taste. Body is a bit light and alcohol was not overly pronounced. Not exactly sure why this is getting such low ratings – I though it was a well craft eisbock.

The aroma reminds of bourbon or whiskey or rum - liquor at any rate. The appearance is a rumlike hue. The palate is strangely reminiscent of a tawny port - sweet, slightly cloying, with a lingering sweet aftertaste. Nice, but probably too sweet and too strong to be a staple.
