Commercial Description:
This world-famous beer has the character and richness to stand in for fine sherry or port. Just the right degree of sweetness - never cloying; wonderfully aromatic and warming. EKU 28 is the one whenever something good and strong is needed.

In the bottle at Huber Haus. Pours amber with a quickly diminishing head. Has a peculiar apple aroma, if you can get past the alcohol burn. Crystal clear in its transluscence. Sweet and syrupy without any hop balance. Sorry, but just about any American Barleywine can kick its ass. Someday, maybe, the Germans will discover the hop when they play with the high gravity stuff. UPDATE 6/25/6: On tap at the Huber Haus. Amber beer with a thick rich cascading head. A very chewey beer vom foss, but I find it to still be out of balance with the strong alcohol not masked by malt or hops sufficiently.

I think that the circumstances under which this beer were tried would greatly influence my rating of this beer. As it happens, I think that I enjoyed this beer within the perfect setting-- in front of a warm fire, Christmas tree lit up beside me, Christmas songs playing in the background, Scrabble game with my wife. Pours a clear copper amber with a yellow, sponge-toffee head that is surprisingly as short-lived as it is dense. English toffee, bourbon, wood aroma. Flavours of toffee, brown sugar, with a sherry touch to its character and a definite subtle kiersch flavour in the finish. Very warming but nat at all harsh, sweet but not cloying. A perfect winter sipper, and along with the circumstances, I enjoyed it very much!

Pours a nice clear coppery-red with a fairly thick, pale yellow head that does not stick around. Aroma is strong and more fruity than malty, not at all like a beer with such a high alcohol content. Flavor has a fairly fierce but not overwhelming alcohol bite; taste is mainly sweet and fruity with an undertone of caramel, more like liquor than beer. Aftertaste is sweet without being cloying.

another wish lister crossed off!! always wanted to try a eisbock....no real head..no lace...this is meant to get tipsy off of...sweet ,bold, mean, and german. quite flavourful considering...lots of aroma morsels; sweet honey, pale, alco, port, cherry, sugar, that smell you get after you get hit in the face with a soccer ball,sherry... bought at the bierkonig in amsterdam

Pours a yellowed brownish red with a darker than expected light tan head, big at first, diminishing over time. The nose is sweet with big fruity, raisiny malt and alcohol. Dark caramel notes sneak out. The palate is smooth and a bit slippery with a bit of alcohol warming. The flavors a really bold and tasty. Big sweet malt giving raisin sorts of notes common in barleywines. Fruity sweetness is balanced with oaky and slightly spicy flavors as well as ample alcohol. A quick bubblegum aftertaste followed by lingering oak and alcohol type bitterness. I see how people could dislike this beer so much, but for me, this was very enjoyable. I particularly enjoy beers that use high levels of alcohol to balance sweetness. I find it really cuts down potentially cloying beers better than mouth scraping hop-bombs. Not that I don’t love hop bombs!

11.2oz bottle poured a clear copper with off white head that vanished in seconds. Nice strong malty and dark fruit aroma. I get semi sweet caramel, dates, plums, alcohol and a slight hint of olives. This has a nice rich mouth feel. At the start I get a slight hint of olive, some tasty caramel and solid dark fruitiness. By midway the caramel sweetens and builds. Beyond midway the fruitiness takes over somewhat with growing alcohol warmth in the background. All of the flavor notes listed on the label really came true for me. This beer just reached out and gave me a warm hug.

[15 year old vintage - thanks a million Ungstrup] Hazy brown with tiny head. Sweet fruity aroma with malt, sherry and plums. Sweet flavor with dark overripe fruits, toasted malt, caramel and sherry notes.

33cl bottle from a Leclerc in Colombes, Paris. Gold with a ring of white head; intense aroma of dried fruit - dates, prunes, raisins, apples and pears; the mouth feel is that of a dessert wine, cloyingly sweet, with apricot and marzipan flavours; warming spirit-like finish, reminding me of Calvados or a fruity Speyside malt whisky. A beer to sip very slowly and enjoy.
