Light-medium copper color with a very slight head, seems to be lacking in lace as well. Flavor profile is malty and sweet up front, in fact largely dominated by light brown sugary sweetness but finishes with some mildly pleasant fruity, licorice and alcoholic tones. Smooth and lightly syrupy on the palate, body is undoubtedly very full. It had been a very long time since I'd sampled this beer last, and at the time I remember being completely daunted by the alcohol content alone, much less the huge, fruity maltiness this beer has to offer. I found a 12oz. bottle nigh impossible to finish singlehandedly, in fact, so you could say I didn't like it very much. Since those days I've sampled a couple of beers that were over twice as strong as this one in regards to alcohol content, so EKU 28 seems pretty tame anymore. Not bad, either, for all its one-dimensional charms. Darkover (1314), Columbus, Ohio, USA

| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jul 17, 2005 Orange-amber, almost salmon colored, and lacking a head so it almost looks like a tinted wine. Hearty alcoholic malt aroma that reappears in the flavor. A great, warming , heavy on the palate, winter beer. Like a fine, malty wine. YogiBeera (2437), Hamburg, Germany

Flavor is strong, sweet, malty and has an alcohol kick and a half. Alcohol is also in aroma, and it is up front in the flavor. I would rather have a standard doppelbock, but this isn't terrible by any means. ¾ (4999), Colorado, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Oct 13, 2003 Bright orange/pink hue. Apple cider in the aroma, quite dry with a sugary sweet flavor of orange, and grapes. Warms the back of the tongue like a good distilled spirit. skaughty (621), Marietta, Georgia, USA

This is a wonderfully aromatic and warming (11% ABV!) beer. Too say that it is never cloying would be true right up until you actually drink it. I can down a large bag of candy in one sitting - yet this beer is still to sticky and sweet for me. tjthresh (1778), Greenfield, Indiana, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | May 12, 2005 Aroma is rather un inspiring. Yeah, its big and maly. I get a lot of alcohol too. Appearance is fine. Poured amber/orange with a completly disapating head. Maybe a dark cherry with some toastyness. Bitterness comes out good. Kind of slick across the tounge. Alcohol makes it pretty thin.
I would have expected more from a beer with MJ’s recomendation right on the bottle.
