It poured a thick dark brown with a minimal head. The aroma is a worty-like sweetness with a hint of chocolate, some dark brown sugar, and an appreciable amount of smoke. Creamy and full of sweet malt that’s lightly smoked, this hides its alcohol content well. Sweet sticky finish with a touch of hop bitterness finally emerging.
Rating #1700!

| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Sep 9, 2005 Bottle poured dark brown & syrupy. Big-bock character with molasses, wood smoke and a hint of orange. Big, happy malted flavor with light bitterness to start and heavy sugars to end. Potent throughout. Very festive.

| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Oct 15, 2003 Bottled. Near black, almost no head. Sweet and buttery with coffee aroma. The malt profile is strange, it feels boldly malty up front, but the malt flavour is short, and ands a bit fizzy. Low bitterness. Oakes (8093), gone rambling, Vietnam
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | May 3, 2003 Dark brown. Toffee, slight coffee bean aroma. Slightly watery in the palate (as doppelbocks go). Fair bit of coffee - I'm surprised they relied so heavily on the roast barley in this beer. rodolito (162), San Diego, California, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jan 21, 2003 Guzzled on tap and in the bottle in December 2002. Note - the bottled version was just as good as on tap, but had a fuller mouthfeel.
On tap - Aroma of strong maltiness and faint hops. Poured a dark black with ruby edges. Nice creamy white head with a tan edge. Unfortunately the head had poor retention. Malty sweet flavor with a sugar aftertaste. Some alcohol flavor present. Lightly carbonated. Light, somewhat watery mouthfeel.
Bottle - Chocolate and malty aroma. Dark brown color with caramel edges. Tan head with large bubbles that quickly fade. Very sweet initially, then some chocolate and coffe flavors. A little one dimensional, but enjoyable. Linc (736), Sydney, Australia
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Dec 18, 2002 Full bodied beast. Dark as hell, with tastes of liquorice, chocolate and a alcohol. Too much alcohol flavour considering the intensity of the brew. A bit too sweet and syrupy.
