Commercial Description:
Named after a precious for of quartz indigenous to only Morgan Hill, California, this classic dark ale is smooth and refreshing. Its dark color results from the use of caramel, higher kilned dark crystal and chocolate malt. The beer’s flavor is malty and fruity with a subtle roastiness. To finish Poppy Jasper is generously hopped with Galena, Cascade and Liberty hops for a perfectly balanced wonderfully complex character. Winner of the 1995 California Beer Festival Gold Medal; 1996 Great American Beer Festival Silver Medal.

On tap at Zeitgeist, San Francisco, 27th March 09, with Phyllis. Hazy darkish amber. Toffee malt flavour, decent.

12oz bottle. Darker red-amber with a lasting beige head. Mostly malty, nutty aroma with some almost tea-like darker crystal malt. There is also a somewhat odd doughy, yeast character that may be working with some not-quite-fresh hops to make an interesting though not necessarily bad aromatic aspect. The flavor is similar, with a medium malty sweetness and modest hops in the finish adding a lightly floral, bitter touch. Medium bodied with smooth carbonation. This is okay but not great, and I’m surprised how much better the dry-hopped version is at the brewpub.

Poured into a pint glass. Clear reddish brown with a sticky beige head. Tangy citrus aroma with bready brown malts. Flavor is toasted wheat bread with orangey hops, maybe some caramel. Rather light. Mouthfeel is average in every way. Drinkable but boring.

Thick and cloudy burnt siena with a one finger head that laces a bit. Aroma of citrus, caramel, grassy hops and nuts. Taste of caramel, sweet malt, nuts and some Vienna malt character… kind of like an amtoberfest. Flavors are kind of light with a thick mouth feel and mild bitterness.

Draft @ Piaci Pub & Pizza, Fort Bragg, CA. Pours a slightly hazy amber color with a small off-white head. Has a malty caramel aroma with some grassy hoppy hints. Sweetish malty caramel flavor with some fruity hints. Has a sweetish malty caramel finish with some hoppy hints in the aftertaste.

Kind of a grassy amber with soury hops. Not a great beer but mildly drinkable. Their IPA is much better. Bottle from Ledger Liquors Berkeley

Poured from bottle a hazy light caramel brown with a small off-white head. Aroma is malt, light roasted grain, molasses, sweet caramel and a mild fruitiness. Flavor is dry with powdery roasted grain, malt and a slight nuttiness. The aroma sells something sweeter that the flavor didn’t deliver. That kind of threw me off. The body is slightly watery but very drinkable and light. It would be easy to down a few of these. Overall a good food beer, but not all that memorable.
