JaBier (1130), Capital City, Ohio, USA May 19, 2009 Sampled at Barley’s 7th Annual Mini Real Ale Fest. Had this at Elevator last year and while the aroma was awesome, the flavor was a bit weak. Hopefully this batch turned out better. Dark brown pour with a thin tan head. Notes of vanilla, oak, bourbon and roasty chocolate. Smells about the same as last year. Strong bourbon and oaky vanilla flavor that dominate all else. Looks like they went the other extreme this year, but much better than too weak. Still not on par with their BA b-wine though. Tmoney99 (4660), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA May 18, 2009 Draft at MRAF 2009.
Poured a reddish black color with an average creamy brown head that mostly lasted and produced good lacing. Moderate to heavy roasted, woody, soft bourbon aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy complex bourbon bittersweet flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet finish of moderate to long duration.
Good complex brew. Dogbrick (2816), Columbus, Ohio, USA May 10, 2009 Firkin version at Barley’s 7th Annual Mini RAF (05/02/09): Pours nearly black with ruby highlights and a medium light brown head that diminishes steadily. Thin rings of lacing that slide down the glass. Light bourbon and malt in the nose. Medium body with flavors of roasted malt, bourbon and soft fruit. The finish is roasty with notes of malt and bourbon and a short hoppy aftertaste. Overall not as dry or roasty as I would have preferred for an Imperial Porter, but that is probably due to the cask aging. Decent overall.
