Commercial Description:
Cask; Regular.
NOTE: Only ratings for the cask version should be posted here. The pasteurised bottle version is listed separately.
A traditional dark mild at 3.6% abv. It has many CAMRA awards to its name and is a well known brand in the free trade. The beer is well balanced with a full roast flavour. The use of Crystal malt and Roast Barley give a deep underlying characteristic flavour, which is balanced with Fuggles hops as the sole variety.

[CASK: The Waterhouse, Manchester 26/04/07] Kinda weak but not horrendious. Definatly could have been more flavoursome. Not horrible just nothing very nice. At the end of the day it went down the hatch reasonable well.

13th March 2008. A pronounced milky creamyness dominates the malt. Very drinkable.

Very thin and light with a fairly bitter finish. Nothing special, delivery only hints of the expected flavours.

Cask @ Wenlock Arms, Hoxton Lovely looking, garnet black with a fine light tan head. Aroma is of caramel, toffee and a hint of smoke. Flavour is molasses, some coffee and even a touch of tar. Mouthfeel is thin and a little disappointing.

Cask at the Duke of Wellington, Norwich, "Boxing Day Expedition" crawl, 26th Dec 08. Very dark brown, line of head. Lovely flavour - bitter chocolate, dark fruits, caramel sweetness and dry roastiness. Even some smokiness. The caramel in particular comes through on the nose. Smooth, good stuff.

on cask @ Wenlock Arms (London). What’s with the low ratings of this? This is a fine mild! Deep clear mahogany with a long-lasting creamy beige head. Deep roast aroma, a hint of treacle, coffee and tobacco, slightly acidic - really caught my attention. The taste delivers, perhaps a little thin and weaker in malt (and undertones) than what my nose detected, but the (acidic) flavour stuck around quite a while. Average-bodied for a mild, soft, acidic of course, with a slightly carbonized linger. I WAS left with an overall impression of "slightly like dishwater" for some reason; still quite nice.

Cask at Kent Beer Festival, Canterbury: Good example of a mild, aroma of roasted malt and this follws through in the flavour, with a little carmale thrown in there as well. Pretty good stuff.

Half pint, cask version hand pulled at Dove Street Inn, Ipswich. See-through, dark brown body with only some dimples at the surface. Toffee-like aroma. The flavour is dominated by soft caramel sweetness offset by hints of apples. Flat palate, but still a rather well made Mild ale (04.05.2008).

Cask - Fat Cat, Norwich. Dark brown in colour with a quickly dissappearing head. Roasted malt aromas with some hops available as long as they are searched for. Delicate flavours that are predominantly, similar to the aroma, of a roasted malt quality. A subtle bitterness and a smooth palate finish this nicely, if not exceptionally.
