Commercial Description:
A smooth and sturdy stout, made with 10% rolled oats, roasted barley and chocolate malt. The name is referential to the founders of Thebes, warriors who sprang from the earth when the teeth of a slain dragon were sown by Cadmus. Bittered with Chinook; finished with Cascade and Columbus hops.

Bomber. Sweet malty nose, very roasty with light coffee and (possibly imagined) red berry. Just this great wafting, densely smoke-like nose of roast without ash. Pitch pour with a luscious light brown head, rocky and creamy. Sweet lactose and chocolate, light coffee and medium roast. Light bitterness with faint earthy hop prickling. Watery body is creamy and smooth, sticky lips. Too sweet for quantity, but simple and enjoyable.

Boom! Good beer. Nice chocolate and coffee taste. Barclay (my dog) drank the shit out of this beer. He is very picky you see, and anything he drinks, I must say is a great beer. This beer was very smooth, and very sweet. I think the hop profile was overrated, but the chocolate/coffee flavors, and the nice chocolate brown head, were awesome. This beer is great and underrated.

Bottle shared by decaturstevo. Poured black with a tall tan head that left good lace from a thin lasting layer. Nice aroma of chocolate, coffee and a hopped background. The flavor is hoppy bitter backed with roasted malts and chocolate. Medium body that was sweet up front and bitter in the end.

Bottle at the tasting at the Bruery. Pours with a black body and no head of any significance. Aroma of dry coffee grounds, light chocolate and cereal. Taste is chocolate and smoke with a bit of dirt and jerky. Syrupy mouth, light bubbles.

The body is virtually black, showing just a glimpse of mahogany at the outer reaches. A foamy, mocha colored head leaves wet, spotty lacing on the glass. Aromas include dark bittersweet chocolate, lactic mocha, roasted grains, and a hint of smokiness. Oatmeal and vanilla are detectable as well. Flavors show more dark caramel and chocolate than anything, sweet up front, transitioning to roasty, and finishing with earthy and piny hops. Medium-full and slightly syrupy on the palate, it feels more like a sweet stout than a foreign. This is a solid, tasty brew, but it lacks that wow factor.

As too typical of Elysian, the mouthfeel on this is a tad on the watery, thin side which although can be dismissed in other genres, on a stout, it really damages the overall feel.

Thanks to HAWG for this bottle. Pours out black with a small light brown head. Aroma is of some bakers chocolate and some roasted malt. Taste is of some chocolate, roasted malt, slight chocolate and a little bitterness on the finish.

Bottle from Martin’s in Mt. Laurel, NJ. Midnight black pour with faint ruby highlights. Aroma of roasted coffee, bittersweet chocolate and a touch of sweet malt. Aroma carries through to the flavors with a solid foundation of roasted coffee along with toffee, dried cherries, smoke and vanilla. Smooth texture and a long finish that has a hint of pepper at the very end.
