Pours deep black with a big, surging, moussy, roasted brown/orange head. Some lace but not too awfully much. Fairly neutral nose for the style, though this is a cold specimen--still, not much there beyond a hint of chocolate and roast. Attack is mild, with some velvety fizz but not too much. Neutral palate there that blossoms to roast and chocolate by the mid-palate, which carries through to the finish. The finish lingers a bit with some resiny c-hop. This is a beautifully restrained stout, and probably a wonderful example to start luring people slowly away from the Guinnesses of the world. Nicely done, Mr. Cantwell. The aroma brings lots of roast malt and caramel notes to the nose.
The flavor is lightly swet, with plenty of smooth, bitter, roast malts.
Lightly sweet, dry finish. sunevdj (1774), Copenhagen OE, Denmark

Rich black pour with a small mocha head. Absolutely killer aroma - sweet roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, burnt sugar, herbal hops. Creamy mouthfeel. Flavour - molasses, malted milk, hazelnut coffee, cocoa powder, and dry bitter hops in the finish. Hell yeah! HogTownHarry (4005), Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, Canada

Thick, black pour, average brown creamy head - that’s what a stout should look like (4.5). Aroma of nut oil, chocolate malt, lactic and mildly hoppy - really rich, the oats impart a mild sweetness. Taste is very roasty, nut oils, chocolate and coffee grounds, bitter hops - smooth, but pretty bitter. Thick body, creamy and acidic, dark and bitter - maybe a little too bitter, but very well done! brewblackhole (1375), Muskego, Wisconsin, USA

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Oct 27, 2006 Bomber shared with muenster and NachlamSie. Pours amber black with a fading brown head (which is apparently dense enough to momentarily support little droplets of beer... cool visual effect, so bonus appearance points). The aroma is thick molasses, nuts, milk chocolate, and charcoal. The flavor is dark nuts, cocoa, espresso, and a little bit of smoke. There is also an even, woody bitterness throughout. It finishes smoothly with some hops and tannins, and a vinous aftertaste. Good stuff.
