Commercial Description:
A smooth and sturdy stout, made with 10% rolled oats, roasted barley and chocolate malt. The name is referential to the founders of Thebes, warriors who sprang from the earth when the teeth of a slain dragon were sown by Cadmus. Bittered with Chinook; finished with Cascade and Columbus hops.

1/14/09 From the bottle. Aroma is rich roast malt forward, bittersweet, and slightly sour. Appearance is very dark with a well maintained tan head. Flavor is sweet-sour malt forward with a low roast background. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a low carb texture. Overall, big and complex, a lot to savor, but not too easy drinking.

Bottle brought back from WA. Pours a viscous black color with a trim brown head. Smells faintly of dark cherries. Balanced in flavor, with added notes of dark cocoa, barley, and roasted malts. Far too subdued.

22 ounce bottle in pint glass. Black with lasting light brown head and lace. Roasted coffee and chocolate aroma. Roasted and a little burnt (which I like) coffee and chocolate with dark fruit and licorice. Medium bitter finish. Nicely made but a little fruity. Medium-full body and nice creamy texture.

Black with thick, long lasting beige head. Cocoa sweet aroma, slightly roasty with faint hop nose. Smooth and well balanced at first sip. Not too roasty or chocolatey. Mildly sweet that balances well with darker malts. After a few more sips, I notice a roasty/dry finish. Palate was average.

Pours a dark black with a frothy tan head. Nice lacing. Aroma is roasted malts, mocha and coffee. Medium bodied with a creamy texture. Flavor is very nice with hops bitterness and cocoa on the finish. Also notes of coffee, oats and burnt toast. A very tasty stout.

Almost black. Nice head. Good lace. Roast aroma with a hint of coffee. A little bitter tasting. Not bad at all. Finished somewhat dry. Clean and crisp. Doesn’t overpower you with alcohol taste. Also more carbonation than usual in a stout. Almost porter like. I’ll drink this again.

A very dark brown pour with a tannish head arising. Good roast malt and mocha aromas. Slightly creamy mouthfeel, fairly full bodied. Tastes the standard roasted malt, coffee and a healthy amount of chocolate. Maybe some oats in this one? Clean finishing, not too bitter or sweet. Not as outlandish and impressive as some others, but the slightly lower abv makes this much very drinkable. Enjoyed this one.
