Commercial Description:
A classic beer style Porter with a twist. Richard’s love for the sticky green stuff is quite evident in this beer. No, it’s not what you are thinking… the ‘stuff’ is legitimate Nelson and U.S hops.

The brew has the dark malts, chocolate, roast barley and roast wheat, the outstanding malt has to be the German smoked malt for that ‘bit of interest’.

Originating from Bamberg, Southern Germany, smoked beers are very distinctive with peaty notes. We wanted this beer to be different…

The wonderful hop aroma emanates from the glass followed by the juicy hop flavours hiding among the dark malts and a refreshing hop finish with smokey flavours drifting around the tongue.

Original gravity: 1055
Alcohol: 5.2% vol
Malts: Lager, Crystal, Chocolate, Roast
Barley, Roast Wheat and Smoked Malt
Hops: NZ Pacific Gem, Nelson Sauvin and US Amarillo
Yeast: House strain

Subdued earthy, smikey, earthy aroma. Toasty with sweetened coffee notes, cherry and blackcurrant. A smooth smokiness to finish.

1.25L rigger from Regionals. Pours black, ruby when held to the light. Smooth tan head.
Aromas aren’t very strong. There’s hints of dark fruit, coffee and a pinch of smoke but nothing jumps out at me.
Flavours are quite roasty. Initially there is some smoke, then coffee like roast malt takes over with a quite strong hoppy bitterness for a porter. It’s no PKB though.
The biggest let down with this reserve is it lacks a good backbone. It seems a bit thin, watery.
The flavours are great in this beer, if only they were mouthfilling.

Had a funky aroma for me, not sure if this is the keg or not. Slightly chocolatey, smoky, and basic hops in the aroma. Flavours much the same. A bit zesty, some cinnamon tones. It was okay, nothing particularly special. But I was tasting alongside pot kettle black...

Dark brown in the glass. Lots of bitterness and a hint of smoke in the finish but not a whole lot going on in the middle. Lacks a little complexity for me, despite the smoked malt. Drinkable, but not a classic BR
