Commercial Description:
Research is always an on going process at Emerson’s and we like to understand as much as possible about the kiwi hops. So Richard decided to look inside the “Hop cupboard” for new hop varieties at the New Zealand Hop Product store in Nelson. There he discovered a trial hops that has all the makings of superiority and he decided that it should be used in this month’s Brewer’s Reserve We have brewed an amber coloured ale with this hops variety, which is still to be named. Although not commercially available, it certainly struck a chord with Richard. The result - a delicious malt base, brings forth a toasty, biscuity, nutty flavour with generous body to intermingle with the tropical fruit hop flavour. Hints of guava, passionfruit and apricots reveal themselves on the palate. Although there are plenty of hops in the beer, the taste is remarkably smooth with a spicy bitterness that balances the toasty maltiness.

Rigger from Regionals, from the second keg apparently as I had to wait for it to be changed. Well worth the wait, it pours a deep coppery hue with a creamy beige head. Aroma is sweet oranges, water crackers, and candy-floss. Very balanced, with an orangey hop note, hints of mango, and a good level of bitterness matching the nice biscuity malt. Finishes very long and dry.

Tasted 14/07/2008. 1.25L riger from Regionals for the French. Pours a brilliant deep rose gold. Very lacy off-white head. Biscuity malt and caramel on the the nose, nicely balanced with pine, a little tropical fruit. Same in the mouth, and not as sweet as the initial nose suggets. Finishes fairly dry with a grassy note in the bitterness and a little green apple late on the palate. A shade over-carbonated, as I’ve come to expect from the Emerson’s on FYO at Regionals. My first taste, just a few days back, was a lot fresher, maltier, more integrated and vibrantly tropical with hints of amarillo-like stonefruit. It was a stunner... I suspect this one sat in the lines overnight.
