bozoNZ (361), Christchurch, New Zealand May 1, 2008 Tap @ Zymergy.Vanilla wafers with faint bourbon nose. Dark brown. faint creamy off white head. Nice malt weights for the porter (somehow I think these barrel aged porters do better than the mainstream variety), sweetness and mild roasted highlights. Lovely rounded mouthfeel, not strong but enough bourbon to convert any rational RTD drinker (is that an oxymoron?). Baby brother to the previous bottle variety. Dangerously drinkable - moreso as you know it hasn’t the kick of previous generations...
pickled (45), New Zealand Apr 7, 2008 Purchased a large bottle to take to an Ides of March party. Various toga-clad individuals gave it a go. Opinions were mixed but mostly positive. I liked it as a more drinkable version of the bourbon porter. Still, I don’t think that re-soaking the barrels had the same effect in terms of complexity. Not as good as the bourbon porter or whiskey beer that Richard used to make. still a very nice drop though. yalnikim (647), Wellington, New Zealand Mar 12, 2008 Tasted 11/03/2008. 1.25L rigger from Regionals. Risky, I know. Pours a clear chestnut brown with a lingering creamy tan head and soapy lace. Vanilla, alcohol, caramel, green oak, perfume... pungent nose. There’s an underlying green acetaldehyde character that takes away from what otherwise would be a splendid nose. A smooth sweet caramel bourbon character and the roasty porter mix superbly in the mouth where the alcohol is quite well hidden, the acetaldehyde virtually unidentifiable, and the bitterness nicely mellow. Medium weight and low-medium carbonation. Alcohol and roast character cleans out the palate surprisingly quickly. Very very well balanced, just not as perfectly executed as its predecessor.
