Commercial Description:
Literally "dark wheat beer", it is made from the same wheat malt and yeast as the Weissbier plus a little something which gives a more pronounced malty aroma and flavor. Dunkel is chocolate dark with a first hint of sweetness, but a dry finish.

Cloudy dark brown with a tan head that lowers quickly. Chocolaty malt aroma with apricot, banana, caramel and some yeast. Some mild hops in there. Flavours of milk chocolate malt and ripe banana. Caramel, with a hint of licorice. Some fruity plum tones. A clean mouthfeel, yet creamy. Rather watered down flavours, but overall very nice. Finishes with a mild hoppy bitterness and caramel.

Smells like caramelised bananas. Auburn, with a white head. Chocolate and then bananas, with a dy, slightly spicy finish. It got better as it warmed up and lost some carbonation.

Limited edition bottle 2008, pours a slightly cloudy brown with a foamy off-white head. A strong yeasty aroma, as you would expect from a here-weizen, with caramal and some cloves. Quite roasted and dry, with plenty of chocolate and caramal on the palate, and sweetish banana yeast. The finish is a touch thin, with a cleansing carbonation and a hint of tartness.

500ml b/b Aug 07. Pours like a glass of coke with a persistant thin crema head. Caramello & banana aromas. Creamy, buttery palate, muted choc & a touch of wheat and spice but quite a round sweet finish with a final char note. Nice enough

6.3 % maybe weizenbock instead of dunkelweiss. Best before Oct 07. Creamy tan head quick to dissipate. Mahogany brown, swirled in the yeast giving a light tarnished cloudiness. Alcohol noticeable in the aroma, muted chocolate and banana. Disappointingly not getting the banana lump described by beer_ledgend, although I do recall the same from earlier tastings. Possibly a little past best. Head completely gone. Light carbonation. Dry finish. Medium mouthfeel. Low bitterness.

Tremdous stuff, A strong a drak and a wheat beer all in one, what a mix yet not overpowering. Hopefully following a trophy at BrewNZ to become a regular drop rather than just a seasonal!!

Tried this years 6.3% version. Lovely big banana and spicey clove aroma that continues through to the flavour. Murky amber brown in colour with a very vigorous fluffy head. Fruity and spicey flavour with a dry finish that leaves you wanting more! To my mind the best of the Emersons range so i bought a dozen!
