Initial aromas - mingling alcohol, milk chocolate, spice like star anise/cinnamon and pepper. Very reminiscent of a Belgian Dubbel. A few esters show themselves - apple and strawberry, perhaps?
Flavours are quite spicy. Nice and warming with the alcohol - Richard was thinking of us Dunedinites, I guess. Lots of chocolate and cinnamon.
I’ll have more please. Great beer to start a festive night =)

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Sep 17, 2009 I guess this was such a popular Brewer’s Reserve that they brought it back in bigger volume? Whatever the reason, I’m glad they did! Pours a murky sienna with a thick, long-lasting golden head. Aroma of chocolate, spice, and bubblegum (no fusels in my sample). Spicy, estery flavours of chocolate, burnt sugar, banana, and bubblegum. Full-bodied and richly flavoured with a pleasantly warming finish (no harsh alcohol in mine). Delicious! beerledgend (919), Meadowbank Auckland, New Zealand

I always find dark wheat beers a challenge, and this is no different.

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 22, 2009 Bottle from Regionals. A rather un-attractive cloudy red/brown. Smells of banana, raisin and alcohol. The flavour is pretty much the same: dark fruit malt /chocolate with a raisiny finish and slight alcoholic harshness. donfardz64 (419), Wellington, New Zealand
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 13, 2009 500mL bottle from Regional. Pours cloudy red/brown colour with a bubbly tan head which dissipates.
Big aromas of banana here, but tempered with a raisin fruitcake and alcohol aroma. Caramelly malt background.
Whoa, the 8% is really bringing up the body and the bitterness here. Initially it has a banana like ester, followed quickly by a bitter and dry alcoholic note. This warms the mouth and brings with it a fruitcake like dark fruit.
The flavour is intense, but not entirely balanced. Although, considering this is an 8% beer, it is dangerously drinkable. My head is near the ceiling. Wheeee.
