satan165 (164), River Grove, Illinois, USA Sep 6, 2008 tiny head. some dark fruit in the nose, some alcohol sweetness. very dark brown in color. i didnt feel a snifter was appropriate for the style, but it was almost appropriate for this beer which definately had some cognac and liqueur characteristics. not as hearty as the ’real’ dubbels that i enjoy, too much emphasis on heavy unbalanced malt darkness but without the raisins and plums id enjoy. still a very complex beer.
guyinchicago (276), marengo, Illinois, USA Nov 27, 2008 On tap at in West Dundee brew house dark reddish brown brew with frothy head aromas of friuts and malts taste of friuts, bananas light plums and sugar very nice american attemp to recreate a belguim beer kseecs16 (601), Westmont, Illinois, USA Aug 27, 2008 Draught 8/25/08. Nice dark purple/red hued brown with a nice creamy head. Strong sweet clove and sugary aromas. Spicy flavors very present and linger while body is sweet with a dark fruity character. Not bad. Narnad (167), Wonder Lake, Illinois, USA Aug 13, 2008 Served in a flaired tulip shaped glass. Aroma really wafted out of the glass into your nose. When served to the table, the beer had a great head and had a very deep brown with a reddish tinge to it when looking through. Aroma is very strong of banana’s and a little bit of clove. Flavor is very heavy in banana esters at first and then moves into a very sweet middle and finishing with a slight alcohol flavor. Overall a pretty good offering and something I look forward to having again soon. Banana esters are not as overpowering as they were in the tripel.. Definitely recommend trying. DrnkMcDermott (1597), Downers Grove, Illinois, USA Apr 10, 2006 Draft sampler at W. Dundee. Somewhat deeper brown than other dubbels. A slight banana smell in the glass, which was nearly last in my sampler tray, so by now it’s showing just a thin rim of foam. Taste is spices, mostly coriander, with a few more banana esters, then dark sugar ands a flourish of brandy. Once I’m attuned to the beer, I can get an idea of the lighter malts and maybe some wheat, too.
