Thanks to NoLiberty for cracking this open via Shaun E. Hill...
Appears a dark midnight with a fluffy brown cap that sticks around. Streaks of lacing are left around the glass.
Smell is of red wine character, wood, cocoa, grappa, coffee, and dark chocolate.
Taste is of the mentioned aromas with huge red wine flavors, & dark chocolate melding as a gigantic marriage of faith and harmony. Absolutely beautiful.
Mouthfeel is medium-full bodied, with sweet vanilla that lingers with oaky tannins hanging along the palate. hopdog (5561), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Nov 5, 2009 Pitch black with a small beige head that leaves a small ring of lacings.
A very complex smell, full of character. Roasted malts, tar, wood, vinous fruits, oak barrel and perhaps a fresh floral note. Hints of vanilla and alcohol. Nice.
The taste is not as impressive as the smell, but still very good. Powerful and rich. Hard roasted malts, dry woody notes, oak barrel, chocolate, molasses, vinous grape-like fruity notes. The finish is rather dry and bitter with notes of vanilla, salt licorice and roasted malts. The alcohol is noticeable. Nice balance throughout.
Very full-bodied and a thick creamy texture.
A very good beer. Complex and aggressive with an interesting barrel character. Recommended.
