Commercial Description:
Péché Mortel (French for "Mortal Sin") is an intensely black and dense beer with very pronounced roasted flavours. Fair trade coffee is infused during the brewing process, intensifying the bitterness of the beer and giving it a powerful coffee taste. Péché mortel is brewed to be savored; we invite you to drink it in moderation.

This stout style, high in alcohol and bitterness in order to favour preservation, was historically brewed to support the long and arduous voyage necessary to export the beer from England to Russia. The word Imperial comes from the fact that the beer was specially brewed for the Russian tsar’s court.

Bottle: I actually had this three years ago on cask, again recently in bottle, I’m surprised I’d never actually rated it. Pours black black black, nice brown head on top that clings to the side of the glass. Strong aroma of deep roasted espresso, anise, and dark chocolate. First sip is just a punch of dark, roasted coffee alongside a nice wallop of alcohol. You can tell it’s almost 10% but in a positive way, it’s a gentle, warming alcohol. Oily and thick drinking, really nice. Warms great, almost a rubber-like aroma added, continued boozy warmth. Great beer.

Pours a vicous, oily black with a thin tan head. Aromas of coffee, anise, dark chocolate and a hint of leather. Its quite roasty with a prominate coffee flavor; also vanilla, dark chocolate and a hint of dark fruit. Med-full bodied with bitter dark chocolate on the finish.

Traded from beerbaron420, and damn glad to have it. Thanks a lot! Black black in the glass with mocha brown head, lace and ring. Thick and slow moving in the glass. Super rich coffee and bakers chocolate nose. Bit of fruitiness hiding in the back. Cherry? Smells fantastic. Big bitter burst up front with a bit of alcohol. Bitter roast to bitter cocoa to big burst of dark fruit sweetness. Back to bitter and coffee. Lots of movement in the mouth, but all coming back to bitterness. Beautiful to look at, but not as good as it looks.

Pours a dark black color with a thin brown head. Strong, powerful coffee aroma. Taste is like black coffee with some chocolate and roasted malts. Very, very good! Creamy mouthfeel. Alcohol was well hidden at first, but started to become noticable after the beer warmed up. Overall this is excellent, one of the best stouts I’ve had.

( 12oz bottle) Pours a deep brownish/black with perfect dark brown 2 finger head that sticks around a nice long while. Laces the glass extremely well, and looks almost perfect for the style. Smell is really nice. Loads of semi-sweet chocolate chip morsels, deep espresso/dark coffee notes, some roastiness although at a minimum. Dominant on the chocolate as it warms. Taste follows the nose, but even better than expected. As it’s cold it’s actually more bitter than I prefer, but as it warms to room temperature there is a lot of complexity here. Dark chocolate notes meld with cocoa nibs, the fair trade coffee as mentioned on the label is prominent and lingers on the palette in a nice way, and as it warms to room temperature the chocolate takes over and it is superbly balanced. I wish I’d drank the whole bottle at room temperature. Could finish slightly creamier on the finish. Coats the mouth almost like none other, and a carbonation that is so intense it dances across the tongue. Really perfection here.

The aroma is strongly of fresh ground, roasted coffee and chocolate malt. Faint licorice aroma detectable as well. It pours with a thin head that lasts a while. I held my glass up to a light and Peche Mortel was completely opaque and a deep black. The taste is immediately of superb coffe and sweet malt, followed by a chocolately middle and finishing again with coffee. Slight hints of licorice along with a complexity and depth of flavor. Very clean on the palate. My glass was left with fine and sexy lacing. An 11.5 ounce bottle left me completely satisfied. This is the coffee stout to which I will compare any future coffee beer I have. I enjoyed the very memorable flavors and absolutely no off notes. One of the best. A perfect 5 in that I cannot imagine how it could have been better.

Nice Dark black coloring with a lil brown head. At first the taste is a bit bitter, but suddenly a smooth rich taste of rosted coffee kicks in. Alcohol free taste. One of the best Stout i tried.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown with a thin tan head. The aroma is straond with coffee, but there is a nice roasted malt backbone. Notes of chocolate, vanilla, and a small amount of dark fruits stand out. On the palate, it is chewy with a nice alcohol burn. The taste really brings out the coffee, but I pick up on a tiny bit of licorice as well. It finishes smooth, leaving a nice alcohol burn all the way down. Very enjoyable.
