This beer pours a reddish brown with a decent foamy off-white head. Rich, flavorful citrusy and hoppy aromas immediately make their presence up front. The piney and floral hops blend quite well with the rye. Taste is complex, but it all balances out in the end. At 8% ABV, this is highly drinkable.
Hop Rod Rye is one of those feel good type of beers. Sip after sip, it keeps inviting you back for more. Highly recommended and a must try! ~

Citrus hops, sweet malt, some grain and breakfast cereal, interesting spice laced throughout. Have to try another. MiP (9088), Sønderborg, Denmark
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 18/20 | Dec 4, 2009 Bottle, 8%. Good caramelly and teaish hop aroma. Clear brown colour. Small off-white head. The flavour is powerful, quite sweet, there is a good caramelly and grassy hop note, and a distinct, but not rough bitterness in the finish. Quite well-balanced even though it is very flavourful. 838318 Magicdave6 (5513), London, Greater London, England
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 3, 2009 Tap in the rake. Alround rating: Great chinook like citrus aroma, very fruity, the rye gives it some sweetness and a small sugary syrupyness, but its all about the big hop bomb. Excellent. | 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Nov 29, 2009 Had this before my Thanksgiving feast. Pours hazy, orange/brown with a deep, pillowy, off-white head that diminished to about 1/2-finger from the 22oz. bottle: Malt is quite prominent with a good amound of sweet factor at the beginning, followed by a surge of bitter, dry hops. Earthy/grassy overall, with some other notable hints of multigrain and rye bread, lemons and other citrus, molasses, and chewy granola. Drinkability: Medium-bodied with an overall soft, creamy texture and lingering finish (in other words, bomber!). Rebuy: I’ll keep coming back to this one. #230 on 29112009, DG. harrisoni (6798), Ashford, Kent, England
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Nov 29, 2009 On tap at The Rake, Borough. Clear chestnut colour, lasting beige head. Lovely big hop aroma. OK in mouths, some rye character cereal. It’s good, but maybe the finish is a bit of a let down. Good resiny hops on aroma. though. daleharshman (191), San Diego, California, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 24, 2009 Bomber from South Bay Drugs ($4.49). Pours quite dark for a DIPA, a lovely ruby-brown with small beige head. Aroma is pine/spruce forest, tangerine, and resiny hops along with some malty tones. Flavor is rather sharp and bitter hops (grapefruit) but with a fairly balanced malt character that is mellowed by what I guess is the rye. I’m inexperienced with rye, but though it would be more detectable since it is 20% of the grain bill. I do think the rye helps balance some of the initial bitterness in the finish. I’d be interested in trying this on tap. (188, 1159) Botnik (110), Carrollton, Texas, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Nov 23, 2009 12oz bottle. Dark brown with visible sediment. Moderate off white head with persistent lacing. This is my first rye ale so I’m not sure what the rye does to the taste. A rich beer with strong but balanced hops. Well done.
