Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned.
Ingredients: Water; wheat malt; barley malt; roasted malt; hops; yeast.
A wheat beer from the good old days.
Erdinger Weissbier ’dark’ is a rich and smooth wheat beer specialty from Erdinger Weissbräu. It owes its full-bodied flavor to the fine hops and dark malt used in its production.
The dark beer specialty is brewed according to an age-old recipe. Its spicy flavor also results from the increased proportion (about 13%) of original wort. Nonetheless, at 5.6%, it doesn’t contain much more alcohol than Erdinger Weissbier ’with fine yeast’.

Tap. Good dunkelweizen. Aroma is roasted malt, and some grain. Flavour has good length, mostly sweet with light bitterness. The palate is thin and watery. Black in colour, with average-sized frothy head.

Pours a cloudy dark brown with a fluffy, khaki head that falls to a thin skin and patchy lace. The nose is of sweet, round, dusty wheat and caramel malt notes with bubble gum and banana esters in support. Light to medium-bodied and wheaty with a moderately tinny and drying finish. Bock-like caramel and wheat malt with fruity yeast in support transitions to a dry, mildly tobacco-like finish. The mouthfeel is a bit of a detractor, but it’s a decent dunkelweizen.

Pours a very deep, dark chestnut brown color that’s almost black and completely opaque. Slightly light mahogany edges hen held to a alight source and a 2.5 frothy light beige head that quickly settles into a lasting cap that leaves spots of soapy lacing. Slightly roasted malt aroma with a prominent spicy clove presence as well as some dark chocolate, bready yeast, citrus peel and ripe banana. Very carbonated mouthfeel with a slightly watered down body. Very prominent spicy clove flavor with some roasted malt along with strong citrus peel flavor. The bready yeast notes aren’t as strong as I would like, resulting in the slightly watery feel. Also, not as much chocolate malt as expected. To me it just seems like a dark hefe that’s slightly roasty with a lot of clove and lemony zest.

500 mL Bottle. Rich black coffee-like body with a 2 finger rocky tan head leaving good lace. Aroma of plums, raisin pie, floral, and grains. Flavor is dark ripe fruits with sweet and toasted malts and grains. Caramel and banana come through in the aftertaste followed by a hint of brown sugar and an innuendo of spices in the finish. Carbonation a bit heavy-handed.

Bottle - 500ml. Pours a cloudy dark brown body with low carbonation and a huge beige frothy head. Fair malty/hoppy aroma with yeasty and brown sugar hints. Taste is well balanced but it lacks complexity and strength. Ends with a decent bittersweet, yeasty finish. Classic Dunkelweizen.

Pours murky brown with a large but quickly dissipating head. Nose shows ripe banana, spicy noble hops, wheat and some darker (toasted) grains. Flavours consist of toasted grains, some caramel, banana, more noble hops, wheat, some alcohol, followed by a very light bitterness. Refreshing light body, but carbonation is over the top! Very easy to drink.
