Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned.
Ingredients: Water; wheat malt; barley malt; roasted malt; hops; yeast.
A wheat beer from the good old days.
Erdinger Weissbier ’dark’ is a rich and smooth wheat beer specialty from Erdinger Weissbräu. It owes its full-bodied flavor to the fine hops and dark malt used in its production.
The dark beer specialty is brewed according to an age-old recipe. Its spicy flavor also results from the increased proportion (about 13%) of original wort. Nonetheless, at 5.6%, it doesn’t contain much more alcohol than Erdinger Weissbier ’with fine yeast’.

Very dark brown, with a huge fizzy tan head. Malty nose with raisins and prunes in there, and a sour note too (but not unpleasant). Disappointing palate, very thin and fizzy, the flavours don’t live up to the expectations of the aromas. An annoying bicarbonate of sodium essence was persistent as well.

Had at the brewery outlet in Munich, and enjoyed every sip. Tried next to the regular (hellas) weiss bier, and might have liked this one better but I think that is due to mood. Really it’s just a good fresh Bavarian beer.

Massively rocky caramel head. Smooth, silky and ever so slightly dull. Faint hints of licorice and malt loaf, but disappointingly watery for a Dunkel.

lovely dark color--I realize now the big head on this was not because it had been in my car after a drive. Bitterness and alcohol in the aroma, taste of caramel, perhaps molasses, sweet. Nice flavor, very enjoyable (esp. with food).

Dark ruby beer that fails to kick up much of a head, despite my vigorous pour - kind of bock-ish aroma, with strong caramel, chocolate, and raisin - very faint wheat in the background - soft, yet full in the mouth - light wheat tartness up front is squashed quickly by sweet caramel, fig, and chocolate that last through the middle - dries out a little late, and the wheat character becomes apparent again, adding just a tiny bit of tartness - a little metallic on the back end - more like a weizenbock than a dunkelweizen - not quite what I was in the mood for, but pretty tasty.

(500 ml bottle: $2.19 at Hi-Time Wine Cellars in Costa Mesa, CA) Best by August, 2005, so that’s pretty close. This beer pours a murky, dark brown with a fizzy, light-tan head that dissipates rapidly. Probably the darkest German Dunkelweizen I’ve seen yet. The aroma is sweet and malty, a maltiness that is reminiscent of a doppelbock, just less alcoholic, but the wheat and banana are not too far behind. Sweet banana, caramel, and wheat seem to be the most flavorful components, but it’s less out-and-out malty than the nose indicates. Nevertheless, it’s still a pretty sweet beer, sweeter than most others in the class. Medium bodied, perhaps even leaning a little beyond medium. Carbonation is moderate-to-high, so it’s pretty zesty on the palate and certainly helps to keep the beer from cloying. This is a decent beer, enjoyable enough, but the sweetness could be toned down a bit.
