Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned.
Ingredients: Water; wheat malt; barley malt; roasted malt; hops; yeast.
A wheat beer from the good old days.
Erdinger Weissbier ’dark’ is a rich and smooth wheat beer specialty from Erdinger Weissbräu. It owes its full-bodied flavor to the fine hops and dark malt used in its production.
The dark beer specialty is brewed according to an age-old recipe. Its spicy flavor also results from the increased proportion (about 13%) of original wort. Nonetheless, at 5.6%, it doesn’t contain much more alcohol than Erdinger Weissbier ’with fine yeast’.

Not an incredibly complex brew, however, the dominant flavor here is quite good. Monstrous head that diminishes. Extremely attractive in the glass, although cloudy. Feels very good in the mouth. Definitely repeatable.

Large tan head with little lacing atop a deep brown body, Moderately sweet, slightly metallic, roasted malt aroma. Taste was soft fruit, molassas and caramel malts. The wheat flavor was well concealed. Semi-dry, lingering, almost cloying, finish.

Brown bottle, 500 ml, expiry date: 06-2006, purchase date: November 7, 2005, drank in an Erdinger glass; eye: dark brown almost opaque, nice coffee head, little effervescence; nose: caramel, bread, metal, a bit of herbs and a bit of spices; mouth: well built but surprisingly not much taste, a bit of caramel, a bit of bitterness, medibum body, relatively long finale all in relative average bitterness FRANÇAIS Bouteille brune, 500 ml, date d’expiration : 06-2006, date d’achat : 7 novembre 2005, bue dans son verre; oeil : brune foncée presque opaque, belle mousse café, très peu d’effervescence; nez : caramel, pain, métal, un peu d’herbe et un peu d’épices; bouche : bien charpenté mais surprenamment peu goûteuse, un peu de caramel, un peu d’amertume, corps moyen, finale relativement longue

Nice creamy, hazy, dark brown color with a beautiful head. Unfortunatly, the aroma and flavors aren’t nearly as impressive as the way it looks in the glass. Some dark chocolate and light banana with a hint of spice is struggling to poke through. Nice and drinkable, but not one to specifically seek out. Had on tap in Frankfurt.

Sickly-sweet German dark wheat beer. It poured a mahogany colour with a huge rocky head that lasted and lasted. Great aroma - fruit cake, dark malts, hint of licorice. Sweet chocolatey notes at the front of the mouth, some caramel, spice, and a light bitter finish with a little ’burn’ from the alcohol. Medium bodied and quite aerated. However, I found the spicy sweetness cloying by the middle of the bottle and struggled to finish it. Needs some bitterness to provide balance. (Bottle, Best Before Sep 2005)

Bottle, snifter. Deep brown hue with ruby edges. Large, foamy, light tan head. Raisins, over popped popcorn, flowers, clove, caramel, toffee. Very light aroma. Moderately sweet flavor. Lightly sweet, moderately acidic, lightly bitter finish. Heavy on the burnt popcorn flavor. Little bit of chocolate and roasted grains. Medium body, watery texture, fizzy carbonation. Meh. Lots of meh.

Moderate spiciness, I agree with other raters that this does not exhibit a lot of wheat beer characteristics. I get no clove/banana flavors, but much more like a regular german dunkel with a little extra spiciness.

Hazy dark amber under a large medium lasting pale beige head. Head form random large bubbles as it settles. Faint vinous sherry aroma when cold. More toffee-ish fruity caramel malt when warm. Medium lowly carbonated body. I found it somewhat over balanced towards the sweet dimension with a big sweet malty golden syrup and fruity estery start. Milder honey sweet middle and disappointing flat sweet soft drink style finish. It’s all malt - where’s the hops and wheat flavours?
