Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned.
Ingredients: Water; wheat malt; barley malt; roasted malt; hops; yeast.
A wheat beer from the good old days.
Erdinger Weissbier ’dark’ is a rich and smooth wheat beer specialty from Erdinger Weissbräu. It owes its full-bodied flavor to the fine hops and dark malt used in its production.
The dark beer specialty is brewed according to an age-old recipe. Its spicy flavor also results from the increased proportion (about 13%) of original wort. Nonetheless, at 5.6%, it doesn’t contain much more alcohol than Erdinger Weissbier ’with fine yeast’.

I actually own an Erdinger Weibbier glass, in which I used in consuming this Dunkle. This is another beer that’s best quality is unfortunately it’s initial appearance. This beer poured a beautiful crimson / black, with a soft pillow like head. Sadly to say the head dissipated quickly due to the beers lack of body. This could be a great dunkel if the palate was a bit creamer. But as it is, this brew is fairly watery. In the aroma and flavor the malt is most obvious, the wheat in the slightly bitter finish. Overall, this was an uneventful Dunkel, very much unlike my favorite, Julius Echter Dunkel.

Pours a cloudy dark brown with a fluffy, khaki head that falls to a thin skin and patchy lace. The nose is of sweet, round, dusty wheat and caramel malt notes with bubble gum and banana esters in support. Light to medium-bodied and wheaty with a moderately tinny and drying finish. Bock-like caramel and wheat malt with fruity yeast in support transitions to a dry, mildly tobacco-like finish. The mouthfeel is a bit of a detractor, but it’s a decent dunkelweizen.

Dark brown in colour with lots of carbonation. Aromas of raisin, spicy yeast, and a touch of roasted grain. Surprisingly astringent roasted grain flavors dominate the palate, with a bit of the standard hefeweizen banana flavors creaping in at the tinish. I thought that the roasted flavors dominated too much, and it would have been better to get some other more subtle flavors out of the darker grains.

Pretty good, although not nearly as flavorful as Franziskaner or Paulaner’s dunkels. Still it was quite nice with the typical flavor of a dunkelweizen, although slightly toned down.

Re-rate 11/08/05, as this is a frequent guest in my beer fridge. Tasted from the bottle and poured into a weissbier glass. Deep cola brown, made opaque by the yeast sediment. As I poured, the off white head slowly formed a fluffy mountain out of the rim, and persisted until the finish, leaving gluggy webs of foam down the glass. Biscuity aroma, with hints of toffee, gritty malt and wheat, cocoa, brine?, and a tangy, almost sour note. Sweet biscuity malt in the mouth, very low roasted grain bitterness in the back, wheat, cocoa, coffee and mocha flavours throughout. Has an underlying sourish malt note that seems to compliment rather than offset it well blended taste. Lively carbonation, nice balance of flavour and a full body make for a great sessionable Dunkelweiss. Not overly complex, but very well crafted and at the better end of the Erdinger offerings. Perfect drop for the summer months.
