Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned.
Ingredients: Water; wheat malt; barley malt; roasted malt; hops; yeast.
A wheat beer from the good old days.
Erdinger Weissbier ’dark’ is a rich and smooth wheat beer specialty from Erdinger Weissbräu. It owes its full-bodied flavor to the fine hops and dark malt used in its production.
The dark beer specialty is brewed according to an age-old recipe. Its spicy flavor also results from the increased proportion (about 13%) of original wort. Nonetheless, at 5.6%, it doesn’t contain much more alcohol than Erdinger Weissbier ’with fine yeast’.

On tap at The Red in Santa Cruz. Pours an extremely dark brown, nearly opaque, with an off-white head of 1 finger. Aroma is half banana phenol, half sweet, caky malt. Taste is less malty than the aroma, almost indistinguishable from a regular hefeweizen. Not much clove character. Palate is, as expected in a wheat beer, exquisitely smooth and drinkable.

Beautifully dark brown / black. Smooth, thick, roasted coffee, raisins and maybe a little smoky taste. I’m quite new to weizes, but this doesn’t actually taste much like a weizen. Stout comes to mind with the smoothness. Very nice carbonation.

In the summer I would probably always go for the fruity and refreshing Hefeweizen. The Dunkel is very good too though: Big creamy head and some pleasant light malts.

0.5 l bottle. Pours dark brown body with huge ocher head. Not too much aroma but nice hints of chocolate malt and some wheat. Flavor is very nice and full, not so sweet and similar to the Hefe Weizen but good on the other side. Long finish with wheat felt. Medium carbonation, murky body. Interesting and very good beer.

Bottle brown, 500 ml, 12.9 P
Appearance: Body is hazy or even murky, cloudy, dark brown to hazy black, head is frothy, off- white, regular in structure, gives some fair lacing, body is medium, carbonation is mild and gentle though is not clearly seen, because of cloudiness, very dark as for wheat beer.
Aroma: A bit accidic, rather no wheat what is surprising, it is more caramelic in aroma than wheaty, a kind of burned sugar, carbonation is felt, rather no hops, yeast and no malts, some kind of sweetness, a hint of cherry, milky, creamy.
Flavour: In flavour is sweet, more like dunkel than hefeweizen beer, caramel, a bit accidic, carbonation, a hint of wheat though weak, rather mellow, a hint of milk, chockolate, cacao, but not much sweetness, a bit grainy, finish feel is average, cherry.
Palate: Finish flavour is light sweet, dry, carbonation is soft on palate, body is medium, texture is wattery, finish feel is light alcoholic.Generally good beer, but not as weizen (wheat) beer but like dunkel with addition of wheaty blend. Much better than Erdinger Hefe Weissbier.

Pours a deep, dark brown with a huge head which collapses to a quarter-inch head with great retention and some lace. Slightly skunky lagerish aroma - light butter, light toastiness, and as it warms, a nice spiciness. Tastes surprisingly pleasant - I don’t normally like this style of beer. Sweet and buttery with a light molasses touch, but with a nice strong & smooth malt backbone. Light metallic taste to the hops, particularly in the finish. A bit undercarbonated, but a good creamy milkshake of a body. I don’t dislike this beer. Would go well with a steak.

Bottle.50cl. Good dunkel weissbier, but not the best, a bit too dry and the body is not that full, it needs a bit of sweetness to be just that.

Some malty aroma, very cloudy with nice head and mega-particles.Flavour was somewhat lacking except for the cloves. Perkaps I was expecting too much.
