Looked the part. Aroma was brown sugar, malt and some dark fruit. Flavour was pretty malty with some sweetness. Balance was ok. Not bad, just not earth shattering. Probably the best beer of the trip, which isn’t saying much. jujubeast6000 (795), Houston, Texas, USA

Malty, somewhat banany aroma, grapey. Not too strong an aroma. Somewhat banana, dusty taste. More body than a hefeweizen. Nutty.

A little too fizzy, light on flavor too; watery. Drinkable but too little flavor, would not buy again. Slipstream (785), USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Nov 27, 2007 Half-liter bottled labeled a dark hefe-weizen, not dunkel - but I think it is the same. Dark brew with a foamy head. Mild to medium hefe flavor with an astringent rye finish. Fairly hi carbonation. Clean, crisp, and tasty. this was my first dunkel, and I would like to try more. yalnikim (783), Wellington, New Zealand
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 2/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 11/20 | Dec 2, 2005 Tasted 13/11/2005. 500ml bottle from Regional Wines.
A deep brown, almost black, with a big, airy, tan head that disappears rather quickly. A fizzy number. Nose is banana and rich chocolate, while flavour is the same with hints of toast and weet-bix. Cinnamon and apple come through also. It’s lightweight and fizzy in the mouth, which doesn’t appeal at all. Rather disappointing, for such a famous beer. beervana (781), Libertyville, Illinois, USA

No discernable carbonation. Sweet malt and hop aroma. Medium bodied beer that starts dry with caramel flavor. Finished dry with light malt fade. Although watery and thin, this is a decent beer that went well with a chicken quesadilla. corby112 (773), philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Oct 19, 2009 Pours a very deep, dark chestnut brown color that’s almost black and completely opaque. Slightly light mahogany edges hen held to a alight source and a 2.5 frothy light beige head that quickly settles into a lasting cap that leaves spots of soapy lacing.
Slightly roasted malt aroma with a prominent spicy clove presence as well as some dark chocolate, bready yeast, citrus peel and ripe banana.
Very carbonated mouthfeel with a slightly watered down body. Very prominent spicy clove flavor with some roasted malt along with strong citrus peel flavor. The bready yeast notes aren’t as strong as I would like, resulting in the slightly watery feel. Also, not as much chocolate malt as expected. To me it just seems like a dark hefe that’s slightly roasty with a lot of clove and lemony zest.
